Job summary

Horner & Shifrin, Inc. in Illinois seeks a full-time Construction Engineer or Construction Administrator with 3+ years of field experience to support our Construction Services unit.

You will inspect bridges, roadways, and municipal projects, coordinate with management, and prepare pay estimates and reports.

The role emphasizes safety, quality, and collaboration with public-works teams, DOT projects, and subcontractors, with opportunities for growth.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Critical thinking and analysis.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must complete a background check.

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspection of bridge, roadway, storm sewer, or public works construction crews for compliance with contract plans and client policies.
• Inform the Construction Manager or Supervisor of observed problems or issues.
• Communicate with the Construction Management team to address questions from public, client, or contractor.
• Perform inspection of earthwork, traffic control, erosion control, utilities, and concrete structures.
• Measure and record construction quantities for contractor’s payment using required forms and software.
• Complete electronic daily field reports including pay quantities and material requirements.
• Supply photo documentation to support observations.
• Assist with preparation of pay estimates, extra work orders, or claims.
• Assist field staff in developing strategic approaches and concepts.
• Record time, equipment, and material needed for changes that may lead to change orders.
• Assist with observations of traffic control daily.
• Perform all services safely with focus on co-workers and public safety.
