Job summary

NorthWestern Energy in Montana seeks a Distribution Construction Engineer to support gas and electric growth, oversee projects, and design facilities following our Capital Business Processes. You will supervise crews, perform engineering analyses, and produce technical reports while coordinating with operations and customers.

Role includes field investigations, route surveys, and on-call duties with up to 15% travel. Requires a B.S.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Engineering; December 2026 grads encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer's License is preferred.
  • Experience in construction and design preferred.
  • Knowledge of SAP, line design and DDS is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support for gas and electric growth, expansion projects, extensions, rebuilds, relocations, and assist with operating electric and natural gas utilities.
  • Design electric and/or natural gas facilities following the Capital Business Processes.
  • Supervise projects and oversee contract and company construction crews.
  • Perform computer related functions such as engineering analysis, drawing, spreadsheets, and database compilations.
  • Compile and write technical reports.
  • Respond to customers' needs by performing field investigations.
  • Survey and inspect routes.
  • Ensure that cost estimates meet company standards and current tariffs.
  • Assist to develop project-specific capital budgets.
  • Assist and closely work the Division operations.
  • Complete periodic on-call after-hours duties; reside in the greater metro area; travel up to 15%.
  • Attendance is essential and required.
  • Adhere to safety standards and Code of Ethics.
  • Ensure actions align with company values and objectives.

The Distribution Construction Engineer provides engineering support for gas and electric growth, expansion projects, extensions, rebuilds, relocations, and assists with operating electric and natural gas utilities.

  • Must have a B.S. degree in Engineering (December 2026 grads encouraged to apply)
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer's License is preferred
  • Working knowledge and experience in construction and design preferred
  • Experience with SAP, line design and DDS preferred
  • Knowledge of International Fuel Gas Code, NESC, NEC, and the DOT. Part 191 and 192 is preferred
  • General understanding of survey and inspection techniques and microprocessor-based equipment preferred
  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
  • Get Into Energy - Energy Industry Fundamental 2.0 certification is a plus
