Job summary

NorthWestern Energy seeks a Distribution Construction Engineer to support gas and electric growth, extensions, rebuilds, and relocations while assisting with operating utilities. You design facilities per Capital Business Processes and supervise crews, with field investigations and technical reporting. The role requires a B.S.

in Engineering (December 2026 grads encouraged) and a PE license is preferred. Occasional travel up to 15% and on-call duties are part of the job, with emphasis on safety

Qualifications

  • Must have a B.S. degree in Engineering (December 2026 grads encouraged to apply)
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer's License is preferred
  • Working knowledge and experience in construction and design preferred
  • Experience with SAP, line design and DDS preferred
  • Knowledge of International Fuel Gas Code, NESC, NEC, and the DOT. Part 191 and 192 is preferred
  • General understanding of survey and inspection techniques and microprocessor-based equipment preferred
  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
  • Get Into Energy - Energy Industry Fundamental 2.0 certification is a plus (click the link to certify at no cost)

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support for gas and electric growth, expansions, extensions, rebuilds, relocations, and assist with operating electric and natural gas utilities
  • Design electric and/or natural gas facilities following the Capital Business Processes
  • Supervise projects and oversee contract and company construction crews
  • Perform computer related functions such as engineering analysis, drawing, spreadsheets, and database compilations
  • Compile and write technical reports
  • Respond to customers' needs by performing field investigations
  • Survey and inspect routes
  • Ensure that cost estimates meet company standards and current tariffs
  • Assist to develop project-specific capital budgets
  • Assist and closely work the Division operations
  • Complete periodic on-call after-hours duties; reside in the greater metro area; travel up to 15%
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance
  • Adhere to safety standards and Code of Business Conduct & Ethics
  • Ensure all actions are consistent with NorthWestern Energy's values, mission, and objectives
  • Up to 15% travel

The Distribution Construction Engineer provides engineering support for gas and electric growth, expansion projects, extensions, rebuilds, relocations, and assists with operating electric and natural gas utilities.
