Job summary

NorthWestern Energy's Pipeline Integrity team seeks an experienced GTS Pipeline Compliance Integrity Engineer to maintain TIMP, develop risk models, and ensure compliance with 49 CFR Parts 191 and 192 and Canadian OPR. Based in Butte, MT, the role collaborates with Operations, Engineering, Gas Control, Cathodic Protection and Construction to safeguard the gas transmission system.

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering required; Mechanical, Civil, Petroleum, Metallurgical preferred.

• Experience with risk modeling, inspections, and field operations is expected.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the Transmission Integrity Management Plan (TIMP) and develop processes to improve the integrity program and compliance with 49 CFR192 Subpart O and Canadian OPR.
• Develop and maintain pipeline risk models using system data and industry information; assess threats and determine risks.
• Assist with the Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure Reconfirmation program.
• Develop and maintain a program for assessments outside High Consequence Areas; evaluate risk and determine actions.
• Participate in field pipeline integrity inspections as allowed by 49 CFR192 Subpart O/Canadian OPR.
• Assist with GIS system growth and integrity functionality; review GIS data and improve collection processes.
• Develop procedures for integrity projects including bypassing, purging, commissioning, shutdown, and inspection.
• Assist with regulatory audits in Montana, South Dakota, and Canada; produce integrity reports.

Job Levels

• GTS Pipeline Compliance Integrity Engineer I - Starting Range: $74,000 - $100,000

  Entry-level engineering position. A bachelor's degree in engineering is required for all levels, with a preference of Mechanical, Civil, Petroleum, Metallurgical Engineering.

• GTS Pipeline Compliance Integrity Engineer II - Starting Range: $76,400 - $114,600

  Mid-level engineering position. Requires 2-3+ years of relevant experience. Demonstrates a working knowledge of pipeline integrity management requirements, risk assessment methodologies, and applicable regulations and industry standards. Contributes independently to integrity programs, assessments, compliance activities, and cross-functional projects. Actively pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is preferred.

• GTS Pipeline Compliance Integrity Engineer III - Starting Range: $86,000 - $129,000

  Mid-to-senior-level engineering position. Requires 5-7+ years of relevant experience. Demonstrates expertise in pipeline integrity management, risk modeling, regulatory compliance, and integrity assessment programs. Possesses strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management capabilities. Leads integrity initiatives, develops procedures and program improvements, and provides technical guidance to others. Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is preferred.

• GTS Pipeline Compliance Integrity Engineer Sr - Starting Range: $95,500 - $143,300

  Senior-level engineering position. Requires 8-10+ years of experience demonstrating advanced expertise in pipeline integrity management and regulatory compliance. Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is strongly preferred and may be required for specific roles. Demonstrates strategic expertise in integrity engineering and the ability to align integrity programs with organizational safety, reliability, and compliance objectives. Recognized as a subject matter expert in pipeline integrity management, risk assessment methodologies, regulatory requirements, and industry standards. Leads complex integrity initiatives, mentors engineers, and serves as a key technical resource during regulatory audits and compliance activities.

About this position

The Pipeline Integrity Engineer develops, maintains, and implements integrity management programs for NorthWestern Energy's gas transmission system. Working closely with Operations, Engineering, Gas Control, Cathodic Protection, and Construction teams ensuring pipeline safety, reliability, and compliance with 49 CFR Parts 191 and 192 and Canadian Onshore Pipeline Regulations (OPR).

• Evaluate pipeline risk and threats and risk model to determine the appropriate inspection and/or mitigation actions
• Participate in field pipeline integrity inspections as allowed and required by 49CFR192 Subpart O/ Canadian OPR that may include indirect assessment, direct assessment, inline inspections, etc.
• Assist with growing the GIS system and integrity functionality that may include reviewing GIS data, improve collection process and procedures.
• Develop procedures for integrity projects that may include bypassing, purging, commissioning, shutdown and inspection of transmission pipeline systems
• Assist with Montana/South Dakota and Canadian regulatory audits
• Construct applicable integrity reports and documents
• Should possess a working knowledge of pipeline processes (i.e. Pipeline operation, design, construction, etc.), integrity management principles and practices, industry standards and best practices (CFR, ASME, API, AMPP/NACE, CFR, CSA, etc.).
• Travel up to 30% including overnights and weekends

• The Integrity Engineer will be required to obtain industry training and certifications per the TIMP plan, Such as AMPP CP1, etc. AMPP/NACE certification are preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of 49CFR192 and Canadian OPR is a plus
• Excellent skills in SAP, Adobe, Microsoft Office, GasCalc, PipelineToolbox, Databases, SQL, and Python environments including experience working with databases is preferred
• Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the field of gas transmission system integrity including cathodic protection, risk and threat evaluation, pipeline integrity assessments such as in-line inspection and coating assessment technologies is preferred
• Ability to work independently and without direct supervision and serve as a mentor/instructor to others
• Requires effective communication skills both written and verbal
• Must be able to work under time pressure while maintaining high attention to details and providing quality work and documentation
• Ability to work in field operating and construction conditions such as:
  • Extended hours in the fields - including up to 12 hours in the field and ability to operate vehicles in varying road conditions and variable hours.
  • Work around and in open excavations - including such tasks as: walking along the ditch line, entering into and exiting excavations (bell holes), maneuvering around facilities in excavations with required tools to complete assessments and evaluations.
  • Working around heavy equipment - including walking around excavators, side booms, mini-excavators, backhoes, etc. while they are working and/or positioning equipment.
  • Utilizing job specific tools on/in construction sites - including equipment such as: lap top, camera, borescope, 3D laser scanner, sand blaster, pit gauge, etc.
  • Working in remote location with limited communications - including situations such as: working with limited personnel, limited communication coverage, difficult (steep) terrain, etc.
  • Maneuver around above ground facilities to complete assessments, turn valves, operate equipment, complete assessments, etc.
