Job summary

Schnabel is seeking a Controller to oversee the accounting and financial reporting function for a nationwide specialty geotechnical contractor. Located in Sterling, VA, the Controller reports to the CFO and leads the accounting team with operations, payroll, and executive partners to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.

The role emphasizes internal controls, audits, and construction project accounting (WIP, job cost).

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting and CPA required.
• 8+ years in accounting with 5+ in commercial construction.
• Experience as Assistant Controller/Controller in a contractor with $100M–$200M revenue.
• Hands-on with Sage 300 CRE and advanced Excel skills.
• Strong leadership and communication abilities for managing a team.

Responsibilities

• Lead monthly, quarterly and annual close and reporting.
• Manage general ledger, reconciliations and GAAP financial statements.
• Supervise accounting staff and develop the team.
• Maintain internal controls and accounting policies.
• Support audits, tax filings and lender reporting.
• Oversee job costing, WIP, payroll allocations and intercompany accounting.
• Partner with operations for project profitability reporting.
• Assist CFO with planning and strategic initiatives.
• Drive process improvements and automation initiatives.
