ORLEANS NIAGARA BOCES is seeking a part-time Computer Technician to support the day-to-day network operations and assist with hardware repairs and software upgrades. The technician will collect diagnostic information from end users, guide them through basic connectivity issues, and perform routine maintenance under supervision.

Position is temporary and part-time, offering 15–30 hours per week for up to 3 months.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information resource management, microcomputer technology or related field; OR an Associate's degree with related field and two years of experience; OR high school diploma with 3 years of related experience.

Job Description

This is a technical position, which involves responsibility for providing support to Computer Specialists in the day-to-day operations of the network through the completion of helpdesk support tickets. The incumbent is responsible to collect diagnostic information from end users, solving basic connectivity issues, as well as collecting diagnosing, repairing and reinstalling computer hardware from classrooms and or offices. The position requires frequent contact with computer users to identify problems and explain equipment use. Incumbents provide technical assistance to users in their area of expertise and refer user to appropriate resource or individual for problems or questions beyond their scope. Work is performed under the direct supervision of higher level professional administrative and/or technical staff Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
  • Responds to requests for assistance from computer users experiencing problems with computers or peripheral equipment;
  • Installs and tests computer hardware, software, peripheral equipment and necessary cabling;
  • Configures equipment and completes cable interfaces, referencing wiring diagrams and technical instructions and using special hand tools and testing equipment to validate proper performance;
  • Identifies problems as being either software and/or hardware in nature;
  • Investigates reported hardware problems with internal components and peripheral equipment;
  • Identifies the extent of a malfunction using diagnostic procedures, software and equipment;
  • Replaces defective equipment or return to the vendor for replacement or repair;
  • Performs routine maintenance and upgrades of hardware;
  • Installs new or upgraded software;
  • Provides phone support for system users;
  • Maintains inventory of computer hardware, maintenance activities and repair records;
  • Operates, monitors and controls computer and peripheral devices;
  • Participates in the planning for and the installation of computers and accessory equipment such as terminals and printers;
  • Evaluates and recommends acquisition of computer hardware and software to meet automation needs;
  • Recommends hardware and software for acquisition after considering user needs and agency goals;
  • Keeps informed on new developments in computer hardware and software and reviews publications and specifications;
  • Receives microcomputers and related computer equipment from vendors, unpacks and inspects components for damage, insures that correct items and quantities are received by comparing orders with received merchandise and updates equipment inventory;
  • Reports non-repairable equipment to vendor and obtains replacement;
  • Moves computer equipment to various locations as necessary;
  • Supplies substitute microcomputers with appropriate software while problem computers are diagnosed and repaired;
  • Documents operating procedures;
  • Inputs data via keyboard and optical character reader;
  • Generates reports using variety of software packages which may incorporate graphs, charts and graphics.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Working knowledge of the operation, installation, maintenance and repair of computers and related peripheral equipment;
  • Working knowledge of computer hardware and software;
  • Working knowledge of personal computer operating systems and peripheral equipment;
  • Working knowledge of procedures for initial program loading of the system and of the related software functions;
  • Working knowledge of common software used in personal computer;
  • Working knowledge of the principals of data communications;
  • Ability to analyze computer problems and identify the source of the problem;
  • Ability to install and maintain computer hardware and peripheral equipment;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with computer users and co-workers;
  • Ability to understand, interpret and follow complex technical written and oral instructions;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER:
  • (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor's degree in computer science, information resource management, microcomputer technology or related field; OR
    (B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two-year college with an Associate's Degree in Computer Repair, Computer System Analysis, Computer Graphics or Computer Information Sciences or related field; OR
    (C) Graduation from a regionally accredited New York State registered two-year college with an Associate's Degree and two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of microcomputer equipment. The experience shall involve local area network administration and installation maintenance, and use of operating, word processing, database management, financial and utility software; OR
    (D) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma with a minimum of three (3) years of experience as outlined in (C) above may be either paid or unpaid experience.
NOTES

Successful completion of a course of study offered by a technical training institute, college or a corporate training program may be substituted for the twelve (12) semester credit hours in college-level management information systems, computer science, computer technology, information resource management, data processing or related computer fields; OR one (1) year of appropriate experience, if the following conditions are met:

  • a.) The course of training involves learning the fundamental aspects of computer programming, systems analysis, telecommunications systems, LAN/WAN system configuration or a similar course with technical emphasis on the operation of a connected computer system.
  • b.) The candidate provides an official description of the coursework and evidence that it was successfully completed.

Anticipated Salary: $40-$46 per hour. 15-30 hours per week for up to 3 months
