Job summary

Barrington James is supporting a Virginia-based community compounding pharmacy seeking a Compounding Formulation and Automation Specialist. The role is hands-on, involving formulation, equipment settings, quality checks, and documentation in a modern automated lab.

The position can be part-time or full-time, with weekday daytime hours, no weekends, and a focus on developing scalable formulations and training the pharmacy team in automated processes.

Qualifications

• Pharmacist or pharmacy technician with hands-on non-sterile compounding experience.
• Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical dosage forms and formulations.
• Comfort with technology and equipment and the ability to troubleshoot.
• Ability to train and educate pharmacy personnel.
• Ability to work independently with strong communication.

Responsibilities

• Develop reproducible formulations from prescriptions across creams, gels, suspensions, capsules, troches and transdermals.
• Select bases, calculate quantities and set process and mixing parameters for automated compounding equipment.
• Operate and troubleshoot compounding automation including a mixing system, 3D printing and a tablet press.
• Document formulations, procedures and quality checks so they can be repeated by the team.
• Train pharmacists and technicians on equipment and best practices.
• Standardize workflow for consistent production and beyond use dating.
• Support compliance with USP <795> and USP <800>.

Job description

We are currently supporting an independently owned, science forward community and compounding pharmacy, over 100 years old, operating a 503A non sterile facility in Northern Virginia that is looking to engage a Compounding Formulation and Automation Specialist.

The pharmacy is investing in automated non sterile compounding, including 3D printing, an advanced mixing system and a tablet press, and needs the person who owns the formulas that run on it. You will take a prescription through formulation, calculations, ingredient selection, process, equipment and mixing parameters, quality checks and documentation, so every preparation is reproducible, and you will train the pharmacy team to run it. This is not a conventional technician seat and not a lab only research role. This is a hands on formulation and equipment role inside a busy community compounding pharmacy, for a pharmacist or technician who likes making the recipe as much as making the batch.

Part time or full time, Monday to Friday day hours, no weekends.

• Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical dosage forms and formulations

• Ability to work independently with strong communication


• Virginia pharmacist license or Virginia pharmacy technician registration, or eligibility

Preferred Experience

• Medisca MAZ certification or experience with compounding automation


• Understanding of homogenization, particle size, emulsification, suspension stability and API dilution
