Job summary

United Launch Alliance in Denver seeks a Composite Strength Analyst to perform advanced analysis of composite and metallic structures, develop FEMs, and provide strength inputs for new designs and modifications.

The role requires creating and validating analysis methods, reviewing layouts and drawings, and delivering strength reports while coordinating with lead engineers and junior staff in a fast-paced aerospace environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field from an accredited college or university.
  • Ability to make design recommendations based on analysis results/experience.
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment are essential.
  • General understanding of materials and material properties.
  • Experience with Structural Analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Performing analysis of composite material structures and metallic elements to support operations, nonconformance resolution, and development programs.
  • Create finite element analysis models (FEMs) and perform hand calculations; provide strength inputs and recommendations for designs and installations.
  • Run and modify existing FEMs to support updated inputs, design changes, or nonconformance resolution.
  • Review and approve 3-D layouts, models, designs/drawings and 2-D drawing changes.
  • Make engineering design recommendations considering thermal, mechanical and pressure loading with appropriate material properties and safety factors.
  • Document analysis results in strength reports.
  • Support internal peer reviews, tabletop reviews and formal design reviews as needed.
  • Support fast-paced design/analysis cycles and tackle production non-conformances.

Job Overview & Responsibilities

As a Composite Strength Analyst at ULA Job responsibilities include the following:

  • Performing analysis of composite material structures, as well as metallic elements, to support recurring operations, nonconformance resolution, and development programs.
  • Candidate will be required to create finite element analysis models (FEMs), perform hand calculations and have an understanding of analysis best practices to provide strength inputs and recommendations for new designs, design modifications, and installations.
  • Candidate will be required to be able to run and modify existing FEMs to support updated inputs, design changes, or nonconformance resolution.
  • Candidate will be required to review and approve 3-D engineering layouts, 3-D models, designs / drawings and 2-D drawing changes.
  • Candidate will make engineering design recommendations with consideration of thermal, mechanical and pressure loading using appropriate material properties, configurations, safety factors, etc.
  • Analysis results will be documented in strength reports.
  • Candidate will support internal peer reviews, table top reviews and formal design reviews as needed.
  • Will also need to support fast paced design/analysis cycles and be able to evaluate hardware non-conformances to support production activities.
  • The engineer must be able to work independently and coordinate their efforts across their functional and product teams.
  • The engineer must be able to work with lead engineers to plan and prioritize individual work as well as assist in training junior engineers in basic principles / fundamentals.
  • Experience or familiarity with the following tools/software
    • Classical Laminate Theory and associated hand calculations for composites
    • NASTRAN (Static, Modal, Dynamic and Non-Linear Analysis Solutions)
    • FEMAP pre/post processor
    • NX CAD/Simulation
    • NASGRO fracture mechanics tool
    • Unix/Linux mainframe based analysis tools
    • MathCad
    • ABAQUS CAE and Solver
    • Matlab
    • MS office (word, excel, ppt)
Required Education

Bachelor

Required Years of Experience

Minimum of 4 years of related work experience
