Job description

Systel’s business is expanding, and having components readily available is one of the main reasons why. Component Engineer bridges the gap between design engineering, sourcing, and manufacturing. This role ensures that the electronic and mechanical parts selected for hardware products meet strict performance, reliability, and regulatory standards. In the aerospace sector, this position focuses heavily on component longevity, environmental ruggedization, and stringent compliance.

Who You Are

The Component Engineer evaluates, selects, and qualifies electronic components used in highly reliable aerospace and rugged computing systems. This role collaborates closely with hardware design teams to guide part selection from the early stages of development. Additionally, the engineer mitigates risk by managing component obsolescence and evaluating technical alternatives. Operating at the intersection of engineering and supply chain, this position works directly with sourcing and purchasing teams to evaluate vendors, manage manufacturing changes, and resolve technical challenges with suppliers.

Roles And Responsibilities
  • Part Qualification and Selection: Evaluate component specifications against design requirements to ensure parts meet environmental and performance criteria.
  • Obsolescence Management: Monitor end of life notices and execute mitigation strategies such as finding alternative parts or facilitating lifetime buys.
  • Sourcing and Purchasing Collaboration: Support supply chain teams by identifying qualified suppliers, reviewing manufacturing change notices, and resolving technical supplier issues.
  • Compliance and Standards: Ensure all selected components comply with aerospace regulations, environmental directives, and counterfeit part prevention standards.
  • Documentation: Maintain the component database, internal part number systems, and technical documentation for qualified components.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum Requirement: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Core Experience: Five to ten years of dedicated experience in component engineering, hardware design support, or a closely related electronics manufacturing field.
  • Aerospace Domain: Direct experience in the aerospace industry, including familiarity with standards such as AS9100 and DO-254.
  • Ruggedized Computing: A strong background with ruggedized computing systems designed to withstand extreme vibration, thermal shock, and harsh environments is highly advantageous.
  • Electronics Background: Deep technical familiarity with active and passive electronic components, microprocessors, printed circuit boards, and connectors.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
