Job description

Legal & Regulatory Research Investigator
Contract | November 16, 2026 – July 31, 2027 (potential extension)
Remote – United States (open to all U.S. time zones)

100% remote. Training hours align with Pacific Time for roughly the first two weeks; flexible schedule after onboarding.

About the Company

Our client is a well-known financial technology company whose products help millions of consumers and small businesses manage their finances and payments. Their Legal & Regulatory Support team handles the company’s most sensitive customer matters – the ones involving attorneys, state attorneys general, regulators and litigation.

Job Description

This is not a traditional customer service or legal assistant role. We’re looking for a naturally curious, persistent investigator who can take a complicated customer complaint, dig through a customer’s full history across multiple systems, figure out what actually happened and put it in writing clearly enough for Legal and Compliance to act on.

You’ll review complaints tied to regulated money movement services, support subpoena and attorney-demand research, and draft formal written responses to legal and regulatory stakeholders. The team is small, so you’ll be cross-trained across several workstreams and trusted to work independently.

What You’ll Be Responsible For
  • Complaint investigations: Conduct compliance reviews of escalated customer complaints involving regulated money movement services, attorneys, legal disputes and regulatory inquiries.
  • Root-cause research: Reconstruct complex customer histories from case notes, account activity, transaction records and prior interactions to identify facts, discrepancies and root causes.
  • Formal written responses: Draft clear, professional responses to attorneys general and other legal stakeholders, and build factual summaries that support Legal and Compliance decision-making.
  • Subpoena & litigation support: Locate, extract and organize documents responsive to subpoenas, attorney demands and litigation requests across multiple internal platforms.
  • Privacy & compliance reviews: Assist with privacy, data governance and compliance-related reviews.
  • Case management: Track research activity, documents reviewed, findings and production status; keep case databases current throughout each matter’s lifecycle.
  • Cross-functional coordination: Partner with paralegals, attorneys, Finance, Customer Support and Compliance to gather information, close gaps and push back when information is incomplete.
  • Trend spotting: Identify recurring complaint patterns, proactively escalate potential issues and recommend improvements to research workflows.
  • Confidentiality: Safeguard sensitive customer information and investigation outcomes with sound professional judgment.
Required Experience/Skills
  • 2+ years of experience in compliance, complaint or dispute investigations, escalations, legal support or investigative support
  • Proven ability to research across multiple systems and turn complex information into organized, well-supported findings
  • Excellent business writing – experience preparing detailed, formal written responses or investigative summaries
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy when reviewing high volumes of case records
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills; able to question assumptions and identify root causes
  • Assertive, confident communicator who is comfortable challenging incomplete information and requesting more detail
  • Highly independent and self-motivated; able to follow complex process documentation with minimal oversight
  • Strong organization and time management across multiple active matters and tight deadlines
  • Ability to learn new internal systems and research tools quickly
  • High level of integrity, discretion and professionalism with confidential legal and compliance information
  • Proficiency with standard office tools (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and cloud-based document collaboration)
Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience in financial services, fintech, banking operations or SaaS – especially regulated money movement or payments products
  • Regulatory complaint resolution or consumer financial protection experience
  • Legal operations, litigation support or subpoena response experience
  • Privacy or data governance investigations
  • Accounting-related customer support or escalations
  • Hands-on experience navigating and querying records in CRM and low-code database platforms

Industry background is helpful, but investigative ability matters most. If you can walk us through how you researched a complex complaint, uncovered missing information and reached a well-supported conclusion, we want to talk to you.
