Job summary

The State of Nebraska is seeking a Compliance Discovery Examiner in Lincoln, NE to conduct on-site and in-office reviews to ensure tax compliance and educate taxpayers. You will prepare workpapers, request records, and document findings to support voluntary reporting of liabilities to the State.

The role requires strong accounting knowledge, proficiency in Word/Excel, and solid communication, analytical, and research skills. This is an in-office position with benefits and paid time off.

Qualifications

  • Post high school education or training in bookkeeping, accounting, or mathematics with at least two years of related experience.
  • Associate degree in finance or accounting is acceptable.
  • Six hours in accounting as part of education or coursework.
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site and in-office reviews to ensure compliance.
  • Prepare workpapers or spreadsheets to document work.
  • Contact taxpayers to request records of information or to explain process and requirements.
  • Respond to taxpayer requests for information and explanations.
  • Document relevant facts, information, results, and recommendations through reports and databases.
  • Discuss findings with Revenue professionals to resolve issues or make recommendations.

Job Description

The Department does NOT sponsor Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Optional Practical Training (OPT) (Form I-983) or non-immigrant work visas for this position. This position is a 100% "working in office" position. Do you enjoy solving puzzles? Are you detail oriented? Do you enjoy helping and educating other people? If so, you should consider a career as an Examiner with the Nebraska Department of Revenue. Positions in this dynamic and exciting field are on the front lines of tax administration and education. Examiners conduct on-site and in-office reviews of taxpayer documentation to ensure compliance with existing laws and regulations and provide education specific to their tax obligations. After review, they compile work papers to assist taxpayers to voluntarily report any existing liabilities to the State. Job Duties Include

Requirements/Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Post high school education or training in bookkeeping, accounting, or mathematics and at least two years of related experience; OR associate’s degree in finance or accounting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least six hours in accounting.
  • Work experience in federal or state taxation.
Other
  • Valid driver’s license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
