Job summary

The Olathe Police Department is seeking a Community Service Officer (CSO) to handle own cases and serve as a key resource for police personnel and the community on police matters.

As a civilian CSO, you will investigate cases, complete reports, and support various operations within the department. This full-time, benefited role includes a 4-day work week with 3 days off and KPERS retirement enrollment.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.

Responsibilities

• Complete reports to include criminal, general information, traffic accidents, missing persons, stolen articles.
• Distinguish and complete legal action of investigations including citations, notice to appear, and warrants.
• Disseminate information/reports in accordance with policies/procedures.
• Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements from victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants.
• Collect, process, and photograph evidence including fingerprints, DNA, and other physical evidence.
• Ensure accuracy of information entered/removed into NCIC and REJIS databases by auditing both systems.
• Enter NCIC information related to missing persons, wanted persons, and stolen items.
• Access daily over 10 databases to research information for investigations.
• Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents including citations, affidavits, warrants.
• Assist the public by providing information on City and Department programs, policies, and procedures.
• Identify needs requiring a uniformed presence and dispatch officers.
• Assist department staff by monitoring radio channels and responding/communicating when necessary.
• Responsible for general security of the department's buildings and parking lots.
• Provide access to appropriate individuals.
• Perform duties and responsibilities as required.

Job Summary

The Olathe Police Department is looking for our next Community Service Officer (CSO) to join our team. As a civilian CSO, you will have your own cases to investigate as well as being a vital resource to both our PD personnel and our community regarding police matters.

Salary Range

\$50,388 - \$56,199 depending on qualifications.

This position requires the completion of a polygraph examination and extensive background.

This position is fully benefited to include KPERS retirement enrollment and 8 weeks Paid Parental Leave after a year of employment. This is a shift work position however does have a 4 day work week with 3 days off.

Interview Schedule

Interviews will be held the week of 10/12/2026 with invitation.

Polygraph exam will be held week of 10/19/2026 or 10/26/2026. This assessment MUST BE in Person.

Experience and Education Guidelines

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

• Education: High School diploma or equivalent.


• Experience: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs

Licenses and/or Certifications

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver's license.


• Full REJIS/NCIC access certified or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.


• KS CPOST or POST certified preferred


• Experience or Education in law enforcement Certification as a notary public is preferred.

Environmental Conditions

The Community Service Officer typically performs work in an office setting. Frequent exposure to computer screens and other electronic equipment can be expected. May be exposed to oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray. In rare cases, the instructor may be exposed to bio-hazardous materials, waste, weapons, high value items, narcotics, explosive, animals, and bodily fluids.
