Job summary

City of Carlsbad seeks an entry-level Recreation Specialist to manage citywide recreation programs and supervise hourly staff. The role focuses on the Senior Center transport services and support at Pine Avenue Community Center, with a strong emphasis on customer service and staff coordination.

The ideal candidate works independently, communicates clearly, and demonstrates sound problem-solving and judgment. Regular shifts include Tue–Fri and Sat work; some evenings and weekends may be required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of computer applications and programs.
• Public recreation program philosophies and practices.
• First aid methods, practices and safety precautions for recreation programs.
• Basic supervisory practices and skills.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate a recreation program area by planning, organizing, and administering all aspects of the program, including supervising hourly staff.
• Provide skilled recreation leadership or instruction at recreation facilities.
• Maintain inventory control, activity, and progress records.
• Develop and organize specialized recreation programs, including classes, events, excursions, and facility reservations.
• Respond to citizen complaints and requests for information.
• Assist Recreation Supervisors in program events and activities as necessary.
• Coordinate recreation activities with other city departments, divisions, and outside agencies.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned hourly staff and assist in supervision of regular staff.
• Make public presentations and develop reports for the assigned program.
• Monitor class activities and evaluations of programs.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
