Job summary

The Town of Mooresville is seeking a Community Outreach Specialist to support the Parks & Recreation Department in planning and coordinating community programs and volunteer activities. The role emphasizes engagement with diverse age groups and oversight of special events and recreational initiatives.

Responsibilities include coordinating volunteers, developing educational programming focused on nature, art, and science, and assisting with mobile recreation operations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • 2+ years of experience in parks and recreation, community programming, education, youth programming, volunteer coordination, event planning, or related field.
  • Ability to work with volunteers, plan events, and coordinate programs with minimal supervision.

  • Assist with developing, planning, organizing, and coordinating community engagement events, programs, and activities for all ages.
  • Coordinate volunteer groups for park improvements and clean-up projects; train and supervise volunteers.
  • Manage Scout and legacy projects in parks and supervise part-time staff as needed.
  • Lead outdoor book trail program in various parks and support mobile recreation operations.
  • Assist with maintenance of Little Libraries in parks and with Town-wide events.

About the Role

The Community Outreach Specialist performs responsible paraprofessional and program coordination work supporting community engagement initiatives, volunteer programs, educational programming, and special events for the Parks & Recreation Department.

This position helps plan and implement community-based programs and activities, coordinates volunteers and community service projects, assists with recreational outreach initiatives, develops educational programming focused on nature, art, and science, supports mobile recreation operations, and assists with the supervision of seasonal and part-time staff.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Community Outreach Manager or designee and requires initiative, creativity, strong organizational skills, and frequent interaction with the public.

  • Assists with developing, planning, organizing and coordinating community engagement events, programs and activities for all ages.
  • Manages the coordination of volunteer groups for park improvements and clean-up projects, which include training and supervision of the volunteers.
  • Manages the coordination of Scout and various legacy projects in the parks.
  • Leads the outdoor book trail program in various parks.
  • Assists with the operations of the mobile recreation unit.
  • Assists with managing the maintenance of the Little Libraries in various parks.
  • Assists fellow employees who specialize in art and nature programs.
  • Researches community recreation trends and analyzes public feedback to provide recommendations regarding future events, programs, and activities.
  • Assists with programs for summer, schools out fun day, and after school activities with the Recreation Centers as needed.
  • Develops unique nature, art and/or science programs and activities.
  • Assists with inter-departmental partnerships.
  • Assists with supervision of part-time Town staff as well as temporary staff.
  • Assists with Town-wide events as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in parks and recreation, community programming, education, youth programming, volunteer coordination, event planning, or a closely related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Parks and Recreation, Education, Community Development, or a related field.
  • Experience working with volunteers, youth programs, or community outreach initiatives.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
