Job summary

The Town of Mooresville is hiring a Transportation Planner to lead multimodal and long-range transportation planning aligned with community goals. You will coordinate with internal teams, regional partners, and the public to shape policies, studies, and improvements.

Strong technical knowledge and communication skills are essential for guiding consensus and delivering results. Responsibilities include developing transportation goals, managing corridor analyses, and supporting land development

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in urban and regional planning or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning or related field.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.
  • AICP certification within three years of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement transportation goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.
  • Coordinate roadway and transit analyses; manage consultants and budgets.
  • Provide transportation and land use information through reports, graphics, and presentations.
  • Support land development review to align with multimodal goals.
  • Maintain the Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) and related studies.

About the Role

The Transportation Planner performs difficult advanced professional planning work specializing in transportation and associated long-range planning for the Town. This role is responsible for coordinating, managing, and overseeing multimodal transportation planning initiatives that support the Town’s long-term vision and growth.


Work involves integrating transportation planning with land use strategies, ensuring that infrastructure and development projects align with community goals. The employee collaborates with internal departments, regional partners, and the public to guide transportation policies, studies, and improvements.


This position requires strong technical knowledge, communication skills, and the ability to facilitate discussions on complex and sometimes sensitive issues. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through conferences, review of results, and overall effectiveness of transportation programs.



  • Manage the development and implementation of transportation goals, objectives, policies, and priorities

  • Coordinate and conduct roadway and transit corridor analyses; identify needs; develop scopes of work; procure and manage consultants; oversee study budgets and public engagement

  • Respond to requests for transportation and land use information from Town officials, staff, citizens, and stakeholders through reports, graphics, and presentations

  • Provide technical transportation and land use data, including GIS mapping, travel modeling, corridor and intersection analysis, and planning documents

  • Serve as staff support to Town, regional, and state committees related to transportation and land use planning

  • Collaborate with community members and agencies to identify issues and build consensus on plans and strategies

  • Coordinate with NCDOT, Town leadership, and external partners on transportation initiatives

  • Support land development review processes to ensure alignment with long-term transportation goals and multimodal design standards

  • Review transportation impact analyses and evaluate mitigation strategies for rezoning and development proposals

  • Research funding opportunities, prepare grant applications, and recommend financial resources for transportation projects

  • Maintain, update, and implement the Town’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP)

  • Conduct transportation and land use studies, surveys, and data collection efforts

  • Facilitate meetings and deliver presentations to boards, committees, and the public

  • Serve as a key liaison for regional and local transportation issues

  • Maintain long-range planning datasets, including Census data, land use inventories, and traffic counts

  • Perform other related duties as assigned



  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in urban and regional planning or a related field, and three to five years of related professional experience, preferably in transportation planning;

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in urban and regional planning or a related field, and five to seven years of related professional experience, preferable in transportation planning;

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience

  • AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners) Certification within three (3) years of hire
