Job summary

Graham Windham in New York is seeking a Community Middle School Education Specialist to provide advocacy and educational support for 5th–8th graders to help them perform at grade level and gain entry to appropriate middle and high schools.

The role involves working with students, families, and case planners, coordinating tutoring and SHS test-prep referrals, and monitoring progress through a digital platform. Strong communication and independence are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• Minimum one year experience working with the educational school system.
• Knowledge of NYC DOE policies.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially for client advocacy.
• Ability to work independently.
• Computer proficiency, including CONNECTIONS system, Microsoft Outlook, and Word.

Responsibilities

• Work with up to 50 5th through 8th graders and their families and case planners.
• Provide educational advocacy to ensure students receive supports/services to succeed in school.
• Assist with high school selection processes for 7th and 8th grade students and families.
• Assist 5th grade students with middle school selection and track schools online.
• Refer students for tutoring and follow up with tutors.
• Coordinate with case planning teams and families as needed.
• Participate in Family Team Conferences and provide guidance on educational needs.

The Specialist will provide assistance to youth directly and to case planners and parents/caregivers, as well as foster and kinship parents to meet the educational needs of 5th through 8th graders.Duties & Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):Work with up to 50 5th through 8th graders and their families and case plannersProvide educational advocacy to ensure students are receiving the supports/services they need to succeed in school.Provide individualized assistance with the high school selection processes to 7th and 8th grade students and their families.
