Job description

About the Job

This role provides instruction and advising related to course participation and student learning objectives to students enrolled in the Master of Social Work (MSW) programs. The instructor engages in developing teaching materials, exams, and assignments, and demonstrates ethical social work practice to students. The instructor uses electronic educational technology and the Canvas learning management system to communicate with students, grade assignments, and submit student grades. While the majority of instruction is delivered in person, the instructor is expected to utilize Canvas for supplementary instruction and to collaborate with faculty and follow School of Social Work and University policies.

Appointments are made semester by semester and employment is contingent on course enrollment targets. The position serves as part of a pool of instructors from which hires are made on an as‑needed basis throughout the academic year.

Job Responsibilities

Teaching (90%)

• Attend class meetings and deliver course content
• Evaluate student performance and submit grading
• Respond to student inquiries and meet with students

Course Preparation (10%)

• Meet with appropriate faculty and gather information as needed
• Develop course content and syllabus
• Prepare course materials
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited institution
• Currently licensed to practice social work in the state of Minnesota
• At least 2 years of post-MSW direct experience
• Knowledge of the course content area
• Training/Teaching experience
• Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in written work
• Availability to meet at the assigned class time, schedule office hours, and meet with School of Social Work personnel as necessary
• Evidence of attention to diverse identities in teaching or professional experience, and commitment to support the University’s work in diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

• Positive student evaluations from previously taught courses
• Successful completion of graduate coursework beyond the master's level

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $1,785–$2,585 per credit, depending on education, qualifications, and experience.

Final salary offers are determined based on the number of semesters taught within and outside the department, as verified by provided SRTs.

Time appointment: 25%

Note: Each semester is counted as one, regardless of the number of classes taught during that term.

Retirement plan options are available for Civil Service, Faculty, Labor‑Represented, Professional & Administrative, and Temp–Casual classifications.
