Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of professional experience in environmental education, outdoor recreation, community engagement, or nonprofit program administration.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, including on-site presence at the Cal‑Wood Education Center near Jamestown, Colorado during peak seasons (April - September).
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain; Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification preferred.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background check required.

Job description

The Community Engagement Manager is an administrative professional responsible for advancing Cal-Wood Education Center’s mission through strategic community partnerships, program planning, and operational oversight of family and community-based outdoor programs. The primary duty of this position is the performance of non-manual work directly related to the management and general business operations of Cal-Wood’s community engagement and family programming.

This role regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance, including partnership development, program expansion, budget management, staffing coordination, and strategic growth initiatives. The Coordinator works collaboratively with the Director of Programs to plan and implement mission-driven growth while ensuring programs are operationally sound, financially responsible, and aligned with organizational priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Community Partnership Development and Strategic Engagement (Primary Duty)
  • Independently develop, evaluate, and maintain strategic partnerships with community organizations, schools, and family-serving agencies that align with Cal-Wood’s mission and program goals.
  • Exercise discretion in identifying new partnership opportunities and determining appropriate outreach strategies to expand equitable access to outdoor programming.
  • Serve as an organizational representative to community partners, families, and stakeholders, managing relationships that impact program reach, reputation, and sustainability.
  • Plan and lead community engagement initiatives and outreach strategies, including development of communication channels and engagement plans.
  • Attend partner events and meetings as needed to strengthen relationships and advance program objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure community engagement efforts align with organizational messaging, branding, and strategic priorities.
  • Draft, review, and manage website content related to community and family programming; coordinate with communications staff on promotional materials and outreach campaigns.
Program Planning, Development, and Oversight
  • Lead the planning, design, and evaluation of family and community programs, exercising judgment to ensure offerings meet community needs, organizational goals, and operational capacity.
  • Assess program performance and identify opportunities for growth, refinement, or expansion.
  • Develop program structures, schedules, and logistical plans that support safe, effective, and mission-aligned program delivery.
  • Oversee program logistics and resource planning, including coordination of equipment, materials, food, and facilities.
  • Provide on-site administrative oversight during programs to monitor quality, participant experience, and operational effectiveness.
  • Serve as an on-call decision-maker for program-related emergencies during designated programs.
Administrative Operations and Financial Management
  • Develop, manage, and monitor program budgets, exercising discretion to ensure fiscally responsible operations.
  • Prepare financial, narrative, and programmatic reports for internal leadership, funders, and partners as required.
  • Draft, review, and manage contracts and partnership agreements in coordination with internal stakeholders.
  • Track program expenses and analyze financial data to inform planning and resource allocation decisions.
  • Ensure administrative systems and documentation support compliance, reporting, and operational needs.
Staff Coordination, Scheduling, and Program Support
  • Participate in the recruitment, screening, and selection of instructors and program staff; provide hiring recommendations that are given weight by leadership.
  • Coordinate instructor scheduling and staffing plans to ensure adequate coverage and efficient use of resources.
  • Lead instructor onboarding and training related to program goals, safety standards, and organizational expectations.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to support instructional quality and professional development.
  • Oversee instructor payroll processes to ensure accuracy and timeliness, in coordination with internal systems.
Organizational Collaboration and Representation
  • Support school programs as needed by providing administrative coordination, family communication, and limited on-site support.
  • Represent Cal-Wood Education Center at conferences, community meetings, outreach events, and professional gatherings.
  • Collaborate with leadership on strategic planning initiatives related to community engagement, family programming, and organizational growth.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance.
  • Strong relationship-building, communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to manage complex administrative responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in digital communication platforms and standard office software.
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish required.
