Job summary

Cal-Wood Education Center is seeking a Bilingual Community Educator to support our Community Engagement team by expanding access to outdoor and environmental education for students and families.

Fluent in Spanish and English, you will represent Cal-Wood at community events, work with schools and families, and deliver engaging lessons at partner schools, primarily in elementary and middle grades, in both languages as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Experience in education, environmental education, youth development, community engagement, outdoor recreation, or a related field.
  • Experience working with elementary or middle school students preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with parents in a mature, respectful, and professional manner.
  • Strong classroom management and facilitation skills; formal teaching experience or education degree is preferred but not required.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel independently to local schools and community events.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends for community and family events.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • Background check required.

Responsibilities

Job description

Cal-Wood Education Center is seeking a Bilingual Community Educator to support our Community Engagement team in expanding access to meaningful outdoor and environmental education experiences for students and families.

Working closely with the Community Engagement Manager, this position will help build relationships with schools and families by representing Cal-Wood at community events, participating in parent meetings, and delivering engaging, culturally responsive environmental education lessons in area schools. The Bilingual Community Educator will serve as an approachable and professional connection between Cal-Wood, schools, students, and families.

The ideal candidate is a confident communicator who is fluent in Spanish and English, has experience working with students and/or families, and is comfortable representing an organization in a variety of community settings. This position requires someone who can communicate respectfully and professionally with parents and school staff, create positive relationships with diverse communities, and independently travel to schools and community events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Community Outreach and Engagement
  • Represent Cal-Wood Education Center at community events, school events, family nights, and other outreach opportunities.
  • Work alongside the Community Engagement Manager to engage families and community members in Cal-Wood programs and opportunities.
  • Help establish and maintain positive relationships with families, teachers, school staff, and community partners.
  • Communicate information about Cal-Wood programs, scholarships, registration, transportation, and other opportunities in clear and accessible language.
  • Participate in parent meetings and school events, answering questions and helping families feel comfortable and informed about participating in Cal-Wood programs.
  • Provide outreach and program information in both English and Spanish.
  • Support the Community Engagement Manager with follow-up communication to families, schools, and community partners as needed.
  • Represent Cal-Wood professionally and in alignment with the organization's mission, values, and commitment to equitable access to outdoor experiences.
  • Deliver engaging, age-appropriate environmental education lessons at partner schools, primarily in elementary and middle school classrooms.
  • Facilitate lessons using Cal-Wood curriculum and educational materials while adapting instruction to meet the needs of individual groups.
  • Create positive and inclusive learning environments that encourage student participation, curiosity, and connection to the natural world.
  • Support lessons in both English and Spanish as appropriate for students and teachers.
  • Build positive relationships with classroom teachers and school staff.
  • Prepare, organize, transport, and care for educational materials and equipment needed for school-based programs.
  • Provide feedback to the Community Engagement Manager about student engagement, teacher feedback, and opportunities to improve programming.
  • Follow Cal-Wood's educational, safety, and behavior-management expectations while working with students.
Communication and Administrative Support
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with parents, teachers, school administrators, and community members.
  • Respond to routine questions from families and refer more complex questions or concerns to the Community Engagement Manager or Director of Programs.
  • Maintain accurate records related to outreach activities, school visits, and community events.
  • Provide timely updates to the Community Engagement Manager or Director of Programs regarding program delivery, community needs, and any concerns that arise.
  • Complete required program documentation, timesheets, and other administrative tasks accurately and on time.
  • Support other Cal-Wood programs and organizational activities as appropriate.
  • Uphold Cal-Wood's commitment to creating positive, inclusive, and accessible experiences in nature.

  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background check required.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements

Ability to travel to and work at schools, community centers, outdoor spaces, and other community locations.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and carry educational materials and supplies weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to actively participate in environmental education activities and games with students and families.
