Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is seeking a Community Employment Program Specialist to coordinate the adult developmental activities program for mentally and/or physically disabled offenders. This role focuses on wellness, rehabilitation, and transition planning prior to release.

Reporting to the Correctional Associate Warden of Programs, the position requires coordinating services, monitoring progress, and maintaining program materials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or business field from an accredited institution.
  • Associate’s degree in a human services or business field from an accredited institution plus two years related work experience.
  • High school diploma or GED with four years of related work experience or an equivalent combination.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the adult developmental activities program for mentally and/or physically disabled offenders.
  • Provide wellness management and rehabilitation opportunities within the program.
  • Monitor progress of disabled offenders assigned to the program.
  • Maintain supplies and complete required reports for program participation.

About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!


Description of Work

Reporting to the Correctional Associate Warden of Programs, this position is responsible for coordinating the adult developmental activities program for mentally and/or physically disabled offenders.



  • Providing opportunities for wellness management and rehabilitation.

  • Addressing specific behaviors to prepare disabled offenders for transition planning prior to release.

  • Monitoring the progress of disabled offenders assigned to the adult developmental activities program.

  • Maintaining necessary supplies for program participation and completing necessary reports.

Salary Range: $35,596 - $62,294

  • Working knowledge of basic limitations and characteristics of various disabling conditions

The salary grade for this position is NC06. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase may result.


About the Division of Institutions

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.


About Southern Correctional Institution

Southern Correctional Institution is located in Troy, North Carolina and houses up to 700 male offenders in a close, medium, and minimum custody facility.

Minimum Education and Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or business field such as human resources, marketing, business administration, business management, healthcare management, or public administration from an appropriately accredited institution
