Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years old at NTN testing.
  • Possess or obtain a valid Ohio driver’s license by time of appointment.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Non-Certified officers must complete state mandated training (20 weeks).
  • All officers must complete a City of Mason Police Field Training Program (3–4 months).
  • Officers must qualify several times a year with on- and off-duty weapons and training in use of force.

Responsibilities

  • patrols the city in a police cruiser for long periods, often seated for extended times.
  • engage in emergency driving including high speed response and pursuit with lights and siren.
  • pursue suspects on foot requiring running, jumping, and climbing.
  • arrest violators of the law and physically subdue and transport them.
  • carry a handgun and fire accurately as needed.
  • render first aid including CPR at accident scenes.
  • read and study training materials and reports.
  • write reports and maintain logs.
  • observe events and relate them accurately in court.
  • use radio to communicate and coordinate with officers; maintain composure under stress.
  • work rotating shifts.
