Job summary

The Strongsville Police Department is seeking a motivated police officer to patrol the community, respond to calls for service, and enforce criminal and traffic laws. The ideal candidate will have OPOTA certification, be capable of operating with limited supervision, and communicate effectively in reports and testimony.

You must meet eligibility criteria, pass physical agility, and successfully complete background, polygraph, medical, and drug screenings.

Qualifications

• Must be a United States citizen.

• OPOTA certified as an Ohio Peace Officer.
• Currently working or recently worked as an OPOTA-certified officer (minimum 30 hours/week).
• Pass physical agility test.

• One of: Bachelor's Degree, four years of US Army/Navy/Air Force/Marine/Coast Guard service, or four years of OPOTA-certified Ohio Peace Officer experience.

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Strongsville Police Officer. The successful candidate will have a passion for public safety and a commitment to protecting our community. In this role, you will be responsible for patrolling the community, responding to calls for service, and enforcing criminal and traffic laws.

The ideal candidate will thoroughly know state and local laws and the accepted practices of delivering police service. You will be expected to maintain regular and predictable attendance and efficiently and effectively respond to critical incidents. Additionally, you must be able to write comprehensive and detailed reports, effectively communicate orally, and render credible testimony in a court of law.

To be successful in this role, you must be able to work without direct supervision and possess training and proficiency in firearms, defensive tactics, and less lethal force equipment. You will also need to have a good knowledge of human relations techniques and be able to identify and solve community problems while promoting crime prevention.

• Answers emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
• Investigates crimes by obtaining witness statements, collecting evidence, and processing crime scenes.
• Writes reports on alleged criminal incidents, follow-up investigations, arrests, juvenile records, and motor vehicle crashes.
• Prepares criminal charges.
• Serves warrants.
• Handles prisoners, including booking, transporting, and jailer duties.
• Responds to citizens’ requests for special attention and traffic enforcement in problem areas.
• Efficiently uses discretionary patrol time for self-initiated work.
• Maintain a condition of readiness to efficiently and effectively respond to critical incidents.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

• Directs traffic at accident scenes, malfunctioning traffic signals, and community events.
• Identifies and solves community problems; promotes crime prevention.
• Acts as bailiff in Mayor’s Court.
• Promotes police-community relations through interaction at homeowner’s association meetings, school events, and block parties.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Each applicant must be currently Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certified as an Ohio Peace Officer as defined in Chapter 109 of the Ohio Administrative Code.

• Mustbe currently working or have worked within the past twelve (12) months, as a full-time (minimum 30 hours per week) OPOTA certified Ohio Peace Officer in a jurisdiction in the State of Ohio as defined in Section 109.71 of the Ohio Revised Code.
• Successfully passed the physical agility test.
• Submit to a complete background investigation, polygraph, and psychological, medical, and drug screenings.
• Each applicant must also have one (1) of the following:
  • Received a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in any field by date of hire;
    • OR
  • Served four (4) years of active duty in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, or Coast Guard by the time appointment;
    • OR
  • Served at least four (4) years of full-time service (minimum 30 hours per week) as an Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certified Ohio Peace Officer in a jurisdiction in the State of Ohio as defined in Section 109.71 of the Ohio Revised Code.
