This is an opportunity to apply your leadership and law enforcement experience in a role that directly supports officer safety, effective community supervision, and public safety.

What You’ll Do

  • Administer personnel and program policies and procedures in accordance with the Iowa Code and other legal and ethical requirements.
  • Serve as the secondary leadership representative on the district’s Security Threat Group Committee.
  • Represent the district on law enforcement and partner-agency committees.
  • Collaborate with other High Risk Units across the state and specialized units within Iowa Department of Corrections institutions, including CERT and K-9 units.
  • Serve as the secondary leadership representative on the district’s Safety Committee, helping ensure staff safety concerns are identified and addressed.
  • Develop and implement departmental procedures that comply with state laws, statutes, and Iowa Department of Corrections policies.
  • Compile, interpret, and communicate statistical information to district leadership.
  • Conduct critical-incident reviews to ensure actions comply with applicable policies, procedures, and the Iowa Code.
  • Review critical incidents with the District Director as needed, generally on a quarterly basis.
  • Coordinate officer schedules to ensure the HRU can provide secure transportation for parole hearings, jail transfers, and other necessary conveyances.
  • Participate as a member of the district’s leadership team and complete special assignments such as personnel investigations, Prison Rape Elimination Act investigations, and public presentations.
Equipment, Fleet, and Evidence Management

This position also provides oversight of equipment, vehicles, and evidence procedures for the High Risk Unit. Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring four emergency-equipped squad vehicles are safe, properly serviced, and ready for duty.
  • Coordinating routine vehicle maintenance and confirming it is completed on schedule.
  • Ensuring officers have safe, functioning duty equipment, including firearms, Tasers, OC spray, expandable batons, and handheld radios.
  • Serving as the department’s evidence custodian.
  • Ensuring evidence and client property are properly logged, secured, and submitted for examination when required.
  • Disposing of or returning property in accordance with the Iowa Code, applicable court orders, and departmental procedures.
What You’ll Bring
  • Maintain Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification.
  • Understand correctional principles and treatment philosophies and apply them when making decisions and providing direction.
  • Comprehend critical information and make sound decisions within established policies, legal parameters, and required timeframes.
  • Demonstrate strong supervisory, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Apply strategic planning, project management, and implementation skills to complex HRU programs and initiatives.
  • Travel to various work locations as needed to participate in training, evaluations, and other job-related activities.
  • Exercise professionalism, discretion, accountability, and sound judgment in high-risk or sensitive situations.
Special Requirements
  • Have held Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification for a minimum of three years.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Be insurable under the State of Iowa’s insurance policy.
