Job summary

Sertoma Star Services in Northwest Indiana seeks a Personal Support Worker (PSW) to provide person-centered supports in a community-based setting. You will assist individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental illness to live their best lives, with a focus on independence and advocacy.

The role requires strong communication, a compassionate approach, and the ability to collaborate with families and staff.

Qualifications

• Clear verbal and written communication with consumers and families.
• Knowledge of working with individuals with disabilities.
• Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license and driving requirements when transportation is needed.

• Communicates well with consumers using their preferred form of communication.
• Treats consumers with dignity and respect while providing support to become as independent as possible.
• Provides support to help consumers achieve outcomes documented in their Person-Centered Plan.
• Provides training by completing tasks with the consumer, not for the consumer.
• Advocates for consumers and helps them advocate for themselves as requested.
• Supports consumers to participate fully in their community.
• Promotes community inclusion by developing natural supports.
• Allows consumers to make daily life choices and learn problem-solving.
