Job summary

Qualifications

  • Moderate computer courses from an accredited college or university.
  • Desired: Associate degree in computer science from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of related experience
  • Requires completion of National Incident Management System IS-700 and IS-100 within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Consults with users regarding job requests and deadlines.
  • Implements and assists with upgrades requested by software vendor, as directed by the Deputy Director.
  • Assists in providing after hour technical assistance and support to Public Safety users.
  • Occasional night, weekend, holiday or emergency on-call availability.
  • Documents information from Public Safety and Sheriff’s office users to identify problems and resolutions in the help desk software.
  • Assists with replacement of Public Safety computers and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot initial diagnosis of system failure and determine corrective actions.
  • Coordinate and implement the system preventive maintenance program and repairs.
  • Activates/deactivates radios, talk groups, and reprograms radios as needed.
  • Works with outside vendors to prepare specifications for new equipment.

Communications Technician

Full Time - Plan 1 E911 and Public Safety, Rustburg, VA, US 1 Attachments

Salary: $65,000.00 Annually

FLSA: Non-Exempt Reports to: Deputy Director – Communications or Full-Time staff as assigned

Staff Supervisory Responsibility: No

General Service Areas/Conditions: Primarily indoor office environment with occasional site work as required. Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 lbs. Some nights and weekends could be required as needed.

Makes a daily difference in the Campbell County organization and locality through: hard work, open and honest communication, ongoing improvement and accountability.

Performs with excellence, the following tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Consults with users regarding job requests and deadlines;
  • Implements and assists with upgrades requested by software vendor, as directed by the Deputy Director;
  • Assists in providing after hour technical assistance and support to Public Safety users;
  • Occasional night, weekend, holiday or emergency on-callavailability;
  • Documents specific information from Public Safety and Sheriff’s office users to identify specific problems, and documents specific resolution in the Information Technology department’s help desk software tool;
  • Assists with replacement of Public Safety computers and related equipment;
  • Collects and assists with the maintenance of software documentation;
  • Troubleshoot initial diagnosis of system failure for fixed and non-fixed equipment, determining what action needs to be taken;
  • Works with Deputy Director – Communications to coordinate and implement the system preventive maintenance program, and fixed and non-fixed equipment repair;
  • Activates and deactivates radios, talk groups, and systems features as necessary; Programs and reprograms radios;
  • Identifies system misuse and violations and reports same to Deputy Director and may take program steps;
  • Identifies problem areas with radio system and comes up with solutions to fix;
  • Works with Deputy Director – Communications and outside vendors to prepare specifications for new equipment.
Qualifications
  • Completion of two years of college or graduation from a business college;
  • Completion of moderate computer courses from an accredited college or university.
  • Desired: Associates degree in computer science from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of related experience
  • Additional education and/or training may be substituted where applicable.
  • Requires completion of National Incident Management System IS-700 and IS-100 within 90 days of employment.

  • Thorough understanding and ability to utilize the county’s adopted software platform.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as technical procedures, system operating and maintenance manuals;

  • Ability to speak effectively with users and customers to obtain requirements, explain procedures, and resolve problems;
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations;
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists;
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form; Tact and cooperation required;
  • Communications involve both facts and opinions and coordination such as scheduling meetings or repairs with other County employees;
  • May provide leadership and guidance as a work leader;
  • Significant experience analyzing, troubleshooting, and resolving desktop computer issues and problems (hardware, software, communications);
  • Above average degree of competency with computer hardware, software and peripheral devices;Strong customer service skills;
