Job description

About Us:

At Quartermaster AI, we believe the ocean should be a safe and sustainably managed resource for all. By leveraging cutting-edge AI and robotics, we unlock capabilities that were only recently impossible. Our distributed open-ocean systems enable every vessel to sense, compute, and communicate, enhancing maritime domain awareness for those who need it most.

Quartermaster AI is looking for a Communications Manager to take ownership of how we explain what we do and why it matters. This is not a traditional PR role. You will work directly with engineers, operators, and leadership to turn complex, often ambiguous technical work into clear, credible narratives for internal and external audiences—including customers, policymakers, partners, and the public.

You should be comfortable operating without a playbook. One week you may be shaping the story behind a product deployment; the next, writing a CEO brief, preparing for a congressional meeting, or responding to inbound media on short notice. You will be expected to exercise strong judgment—knowing what to say, what not to say, and how to say it in environments where precision and national security context matter.

Key Responsibilities:

Partner with technical teams to translate maritime autonomy and AI breakthroughs into compelling stories for diverse audiences.

  • Author briefs, speeches, and talking points for leadership in preparation for high‑stakes meetings and public appearances.

  • Manage inbound media requests and proactively shape our public presence with precision and speed.

  • Act as the bridge between engineering, operations, and external stakeholders to ensure messaging is both technically accurate and highly impactful.

  • Exercise high‑level judgment in "gray area" situations, determining the optimal tone and content for sensitive defense and emerging technology topics.

  • Produce high‑quality written content that influences how our technical ideas and hardware deployments are understood globally.

Qualifications (Preferred):
  • 5–10 years of experience in communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • A track record of producing work that effectively explains complex technical or scientific ideas.
  • Ability to write with extreme clarity, speed, and technical accuracy.
  • A genuine interest in defense technology, maritime security, and emerging AI.
  • Proven ability to navigate ambiguous environments and make sound decisions on what information to disclose to the public or policymakers.
  • Comfort with a "startup" pace where responsibilities shift quickly based on product milestones or geopolitical events.
  • Previous experience in technical journalism or public affairs for high‑growth startups.
  • Familiarity with the policy landscape surrounding autonomous systems and AI.
  • Motivation by mission and a desire to tell the story behind consequential technology.
