Job summary

EMC Mechanical Services is seeking a Commissioning Technician to support startup, testing, troubleshooting, and turnover of commercial HVAC and plumbing systems in Richmond, VA. You will verify installations, document operations, and collaborate with project managers, contractors, and engineers to ensure systems are ready for occupancy.

The role requires 2–5 years of relevant experience, strong reading of plans/specs, and fluent English.

  • Support owner demonstrations and training sessions.

This position serves as the liaison between construction completion and owner turnover by verifying systems are installed, operating, and documented in accordance with project specifications, manufacturer requirements, and owner expectations. The Commissioning Technician works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Controls Contractors, TAB Contractors, Equipment Manufacturers, Engineers, and General Contractors to ensure projects are delivered fully operational and ready for occupancy.Who We Are:EMC Mechanical Services is the top choice for Commercial HVAC and Plumbing professionals in Richmond, VA! Apply now to join an organization rooted in the purpose of Installing Confidence.What You’ll Do:Equipment Startup & CommissioningCoordinate and assist with startup of commercial HVAC and plumbing equipment.Verify installation readiness prior to manufacturer startup.Participate in functional performance testing of mechanical systems.Assist with startup of pumps, boilers, water heaters, heat pumps, air handling units, RTUs, VAV systems, VRF equipment, exhaust systems, domestic water systems, and specialty mechanical equipment.System VerificationReview project drawings, specifications, submittals, and sequence of operations.Verify proper installation of piping, valves, sensors, controls, and mechanical equipment.Identify deficiencies requiring correction before commissioning.Confirm equipment labeling, access, insulation, and identification are complete.Coordinate completion of punch list items related to system startup.CoordinationWork directly with Controls Contractors during system programming and functional testing.Coordinate with TAB (Testing, Adjusting, & Balancing) contractorsSupport manufacturer startup technicians.Attend commissioning meetings with owners, engineers, and general contractors.Coordinate scheduling of startup activities and inspections.DocumentationMaintain commissioning checklists and startup reports.Document equipment startup dates and operating conditions.Collect warranty information, startup reports, and manufacturer documentation.Assist with compiling Operations & Maintenance manuals.Maintain accurate project commissioning logs and turnover documentation.TroubleshootingAssist in diagnosing mechanical, plumbing, and controls-related issues.Verify corrective actions have resolved identified deficiencies.Support field personnel in resolving startup and operational issues.Communicate technical findings clearly to project teams.Customer TurnoverParticipate in owner demonstrations and training sessions.Ensure systems are fully operational prior to substantial completion.Support final inspections and owner acceptance.Promote a smooth transition from construction to occupied building.What You’ll Bring:High school diploma or GED is required.Two to five years of experience in commercial HVAC, plumbing, controls, commissioning, service, or mechanical construction is preferred.Experience reading mechanical plans and specifications is preferred.Fluent English verbal and written skills are required.Driving RequirementsMust have a valid Virginia driver’s license.Must have positive points on state driving record.Must be at least 21 years of age unless company approval is granted.Must not have had a DUI, DWI, or reckless driving conviction in the last five years.All driving records are run as part of our pre-employment process and reviewed at the discretion of the Safety Team.Physical RequirementsMust be able to crawl, kneel, squat, and climb.Must be able to climb ladders and stairs.Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, unassisted.Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.What We Offer:EMC Mechanical Services offers a wide range of employee benefits, including:A welcoming, family-oriented work environment that supports work/life balance.401K plan with Roth and Traditional options, including a 25% company match on up to 6% of your income.Medical insurance with three plan choices, including Health Savings Account options.Dental insurance with two plan choices.Vision insurance coverage.Flexible spending account.Tuition reimbursement.Access to apprenticeship training programs.Scholarship opportunities for you and your family.Paths for cross-training and career advancement.Paid time off that accrues from day one.Employee Assistance Program for support when needed.Not everyone may fulfill all the requirements listed here.
