Job Description

The Field Commissioning Engineer – Mechanical will lead the commissioning team through high‑tech projects, managing quality control, startup preparation, and complex coordination with design professionals, subcontractors, vendors, and clients.

Location

This position will be onsite at the project site in Boise, ID.

Essential Responsibilities

• Assist the project management team in keeping subcontractors’ startup dates on schedule.
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of system requirements to perform startups, including prerequisites and readiness of predecessors and successors.
• Implement and manage the project QA/QC program, reviewing and approving subcontractor QA/QC plans.
• Schedule and coordinate QA/QC specialists.
• Perform onsite inspections, including underground utilities and delivered owner‑furnished equipment.
• Conduct QA/QC meetings and ensure subcontractors adhere to approved QA/QC plans.
• Participate in scheduling meetings to keep startups on schedule, assisting construction managers in adjusting schedules.
• Ensure systems are ready for safe operation, verifying all safety precautions are in place.
• Confirm that all aspects of a startup have been completed by subcontractors or vendors.
• Coordinate work with mechanical, electrical, and low‑voltage project managers and their teams.
• Interpret construction documents, control sequences, and technical manuals.
• Run startup meetings with area construction managers, design team members, subcontractors, utility agencies, and owners to drive MEP system start‑up activities.
• Act as an interface between area construction managers and multiple subcontractors to support mechanical/electrical startups.
• Verify documentation is complete and equipment is ready for startup.
• Organize and facilitate training of owner personnel in system operation and maintenance.
• Review and process project submittals, coordinating them to ensure accuracy and functionality.
• Receive and distribute RFIs and change documents issued by other offices.
• Ensure completion and filing of record documents.
• Store and retrieve technical information using computers and handheld devices.
• Act as a technical advisor at the onsite field construction office.
• Access all areas and levels of construction sites for work‑progress review.
• Work schedule must be flexible to allow extended hours or off‑shift work to accommodate changing construction schedules.
• Write and publish meeting minutes, schedule graphs, and activity checklists.
• Provide clear communication verbally, in writing, and electronically.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated thorough understanding of all aspects of commissioning.
• Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Construction Management, or equivalent experience.
• Background in materials and methods of construction.
• At least 5 years of project commissioning management experience.
• Extensive experience in industrial or hi‑tech semiconductor projects.
• Familiarity with medium and low‑voltage distribution, large generators, UPS equipment, and electrical installations on large mechanical and process equipment.
• Experience organizing technical data, familiar with CSI specification system.
• Ability to work closely with trade and craft people in field situations, maintaining professionalism under pressure.
• Skill in multitasking, handling interruptions, and managing urgent questions.
• Training in design and construction document reading, design specifications, survey theory, and techniques.
• Highly developed visual observation and interpretation skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, working closely with owners, architects, engineers, manufacturers, vendors, and subcontractors.
• Dedicated team player, self‑starter, flexible, and able to work with diverse personalities with minimal instruction.
• Physical ability to access all areas and levels of construction sites.
• Work schedule must be flexible for extended hours or off‑shift work.
• Proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), and Bluebeam.
• Experience with project management software (Prolog, Procore, E‑Builder, Microsoft Project, Primavera P6).
• Experience with design software (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks).

Physical And Mental Requirements

• Combination of standing, walking, and sitting during the workday.
• Able to climb stairs – approximately 5% of the day.
• Constant hand/finger use for mouse, keyboard, and computer.
• Visual acuity in near, mid, and far ranges; color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, hand‑eye coordination.
