Job summary

Sunset Search LLC invites applications for a Commissioning Engineer in Renewable Energy & Storage to support field commissioning and testing of utility-scale BESS systems. You will validate PCS, batteries, MV equipment, SCADA, and protection systems on active construction sites.

Ideal candidates bring 5–10+ years in commissioning or power systems, direct BESS/solar experience, and strong communication with EPCs and utilities. Willingness to travel nationwide is required.

Qualifications

• 5-10+ years of experience in commissioning, field engineering, or power systems engineering.
• Direct experience with utility-scale BESS, solar, or medium-voltage electrical systems.
• Familiarity with PCS, inverters, transformers, protection equipment, and SCADA integrations.
• Strong understanding of commissioning processes, functional testing, and system energization.
• Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, installation drawings, and technical documentation.
• Excellent communication skills and confidence interacting with EPCs, utilities, and field teams.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent hands-on technical experience.
• Ability to travel extensively to project sites across the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Execute commissioning activities across utility-scale storage projects, including testing and validation.
• Review drawings, technical documentation, and commissioning plans prior to site mobilization.
• Interface with EPC partners, utilities, engineers, and equipment vendors during commissioning.
• Oversee FAT documentation and verify site readiness for energization.
• Conduct on-site inspections to confirm installation quality and compliance with design standards.
• Coordinate daily activities with project management, construction teams, and equipment suppliers.
• Document testing results, technical findings, and performance data for turnover packages.
• Support troubleshooting for inverters, transformers, switchgear, batteries, and communications systems.
• Participate in knowledge transfer and training sessions for operations and maintenance personnel

About the Role

This role is a field-focused engineering position responsible for supporting the commissioning and testing of utility‑scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The Commissioning Engineer ensures all equipment and subsystems — including PCS, batteries, MV equipment, SCADA, and protection systems — are validated, documented, and delivered in accordance with project specifications. Success in this role requires strong technical foundations, cross‑functional coordination, and the ability to solve issues on active construction sites.

Key Responsibilities
