Job summary

e-STORAGE is seeking a Commissioning Engineer to join our team and lead testing and commissioning activities for battery energy storage projects. You will work within a cross‑functional group and coordinate with owners, utilities, and contractors across various sites in the United States.

The role requires hands‑on experience with battery storage systems, MV installations, and a solid understanding of NEC/UL standards.

Qualifications

  • Educational background in Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in commissioning and/or systems engineering within the renewable energy sector.
  • Hands‑on experience with battery storage systems, medium voltage stations, and related products/systems.
  • Proficiency in specification, technical bid analysis, and procurement of major equipment such as inverters, transformers, and switchgear.
  • Hands‑on experience in system engineering with a solid understanding of NEC/UL code compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in meetings with owners, operations, maintenance, design, and construction personnel to understand project goals and schedules, ensuring proper coordination of commissioning activities.
  • Review project documents and preliminary designs to identify gaps in scope and responsibilities, ensuring project success.
  • Execute commissioning activities, managing scope, stakeholders, and schedule to keep all parties in sync.
  • Interface with internal customers (commissioning manager, project manager, construction manager) and external customers (utilities, AHJs, contractors, end customers) to ensure consistent communication.
  • Manage equipment suppliers and host daily plans of the day (POD) with each supplier to track progress and schedule work.
  • Perform site visits to coordinate the commissioning plan, schedules, and checklist, ensuring efficient execution of commissioning activities and performance testing.
  • Suggest improvements in commissioning execution plans or procedures based on lessons learned.
  • Maintain and develop key strategic relationships with major vendors, suppliers, and contractors throughout the energy storage industry.
  • Support value‑engineering and process improvement efforts by sharing project‑specific lessons learned.

About the Role

The Commissioning Engineer is part of a cross‑functional team focused on executing battery storage projects with market‑leading technologies. The role includes oversight of testing and commissioning activities for Battery Energy System Storage (BESS) projects from the pre‑commissioning phase through to substantial completion, ensuring successful execution and operation. The preferred candidate will spend over 75% of their time at project sites in Texas, Arizona, California, and other locations as needed.

Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Educational background in Engineering or a related field.

  • Hands‑on experience with battery storage systems, medium voltage stations, and/or related products/systems.
  • Proficiency in specification, technical bid analysis, and procurement of major equipment such as inverters, transformers, and switchgear.
  • Hands‑on experience in system engineering and a solid understanding of regulatory standards, including NEC/UL code compliance.
  • Proficiency in MV electrical installations, ampacity calculations, short‑circuit/load flow, protective device coordination, arc flash, grounding per IEEE80, and other relevant design topics.
  • Excellent time‑management skills; able to balance multiple projects and prioritize a broad variety of initiatives concurrently.
