Job summary

Job Summary

The Commissioning Engineer II is responsible for leading and executing commissioning activities for electrical and mechanical equipment and systems to ensure they operate according to project specifications and client requirements. This mid‑level role involves participating in training sessions and coordinating project efforts while ensuring quality and timeliness in all commissioning activities. The engineer works independently or leads teams to manage assigned commissioning projects, perform complex testing and validation, and resolve issues. The position is crucial in ensuring electrical and mechanical systems are safe, efficient, and meet high‑quality standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Coordinate and execute onsite electrical/mechanical commissioning work.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead the commissioning of electrical and mechanical equipment and systems, including power distribution, control, and backup power systems.
• Manage commissioning projects from planning to completion, ensuring adherence to project timelines and budgets.
• Conduct site observations and prepare field reports on project status and compliance.
• Ensure commissioning procedures meet project specifications and requirements.
• Review, evaluate, and approve test results for electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Perform complex functional and performance testing to guarantee proper operation.
• Identify issues during commissioning and develop effective solutions.
• Escalate customer needs and issues to appropriate parties.
• Assist in engineering design reviews and interpret design specifications.
• Review drawings and submittals for compliance with design specifications and project requirements.
• Provide technical feedback and recommendations based on the review of engineering documents.
• Compile and review commissioning schedules, reports, scripts, and procedures.
• Maintain accurate records of commissioning activities, including test results and equipment logs.
• Provide daily reports of onsite equipment testing.
• Ensure all activities comply with safety regulations, codes, and client specifications.
• Support safety culture and maintain safe working conditions.
• Communicate with clients, construction teams, and project engineers regarding daily activities.
• Monitor vendor and contractor performance to ensure successful project execution.
• Respond to RFIs as requested by the Project Management team.
• Deliver updates on commissioning activities to stakeholders.
• Perform additional tasks as required to support organizational goals.

Attributes & Abilities

• Qualified with a satisfactory background/MVR check.
• Must pass pre‑employment, post‑accident, reasonable suspicion, and/or random drug test.
• Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, equipment, and testing procedures.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Proficiency with commissioning software applications (CxAlloy, Compass, Procore, etc.).
• Ability to multi‑task and manage time in dynamic environments.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics.
• Capable of presenting information and responding to questions from diverse groups.

Experience & Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field preferred.
• 5+ years of hands‑on commissioning experience in data centers, including one year as lead commissioning engineer.
• In‑depth understanding of electrical, mechanical, and controls systems and equipment operation.
• Ability to obtain an OSHA 30 certification.
• Knowledge of NEC, ASHRAE, OSHA Electrical Safe Work Practices.
• Knowledge of personal protective equipment use and maintenance.

Physical Requirements

• Combination of office and field work with frequent travel across the United States.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and be insurable.
• Occasional work in various environmental conditions, including construction sites and energized equipment up to 136 kV.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Willingness to work occasional overtime.
• Potential low exposure to dirt, heat, fumes, smoke, water, noise, vibration, grease, oil, and dust.
