Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Commissioning Engineer in our Field Engineering department to lead commissioning of large substation projects. You will plan work, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, manage subcontractors and ensure quality through testing and documentation.

You will conduct site visits, review designs and manuals, and lead startup activities to verify system integrity and project goals are met on schedule.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of testing/commissioning experience in utility substations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule and execute commissioning activities for large substations.
  • Define visual checks, measurements and tests to validate design and construction quality.
  • Manage subcontractors’ scope and quality control.
  • Lead meetings with owner, operations, design and construction teams to align goals and schedule.
  • Prepare commissioning plans, specs and checklists, plus functional test docs.
  • Oversee tests and measurements under the Commissioning Engineer’s direction for sign‑off.
  • Review design documents, submittals, operation manuals and start‑up reports.
  • Conduct site visits to coordinate commissioning, evaluate systems, and witness startup and tests.

The incumbent will come with a strong background in planning and executing large-scale substation projects. Skilled in coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing subcontracts, and ensuring quality control, the role will oversee commissioning activities, prepare detailed documentation and verify system integrity through visual checks and functional testing.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, schedule, and perform work for large projects and programs.
  • Responsible for defining appropriate visual checks, measurements and tests that will be required to verify that the design and construction of a substation modification is appropriate for the intended application.
  • Manage subcontractors’ scope of work and quality control.
  • Lead meetings with owner, operation and maintenance, design and construction personnel to understand project goals and schedule to ensure commissioning is properly coordinated.
  • Prepare commissioning plans, specifications and checklist and functional test documentation based on client and company standards.
  • Although not expected to directly perform any test themselves, all tests and measurements are under the Commissioning Engineer’s direction (whether present or not at the time of the test) and require his/her approval before considered complete.
  • Review design, equipment submittals, operation and maintenance manual, start-up reports, checklists
  • Perform site visits to coordinate commissioning, evaluate new and existing systems, witness equipment start-up and testing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of 5 years of direct or related experience with testing and commissioning in a utility substation environment.
  • Strong facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly effective communicator with clear and concise writing and presentation skills.
  • High level of attention to detail with ability to quality-review work.
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
