Overview

Reporting to the Director of Commissioning within a collaborative team environment, the Commissioning Engineer provides technical commissioning support and analytical expertise in service of Yale's capital program and campus operations. This role focuses primarily on smaller capital renovation and improvement projects across Yale's campus, with particular emphasis on laboratory environments, high-need research spaces, and other technically complex facilities that demand rigorous systems performance and operational reliability.

The Commissioning Engineer will work closely with Yale's planning and project management staff, operations personnel, commissioning agents, and consulting professionals to define commissioning scope on assigned projects, assist in the selection of qualified commissioning agents, and review project documentation and construction milestones for compliance with commissioning program requirements. The role includes active coordination across internal stakeholders and external commissioning agents to ensure adequate resources are identified, engaged, and aligned to project schedules and program requirements across the portfolio of assigned projects.

The Commissioning Engineer will participate in site visits, startup verification, functional performance testing, and documentation review in support of assigned projects. Following construction, this role supports verification that post‑occupancy performance requirements have been met, coordinates open issue resolution and system turnover to facilities operations, and confirms that systems training has been completed in accordance with project specifications and warranty obligations.

This position supports the deployment and ongoing management of building analytics platforms, including coordination with analytics vendors, development of fault detection and diagnostic rules, and preparation of performance dashboards and technical reporting for facilities leadership and project stakeholders. The Commissioning Engineer may also lead small in‑house analytics deployments where appropriate.

The Commissioning Engineer will contribute to the development and continuous improvement of campus‑wide commissioning standards, process documentation, and program requirements, working collaboratively with the broader commissioning and engineering team in support of Yale's capital program and climate action commitments.

  • 4. Ability to manage multiple concurrent project assignments and adapt to shifting priorities in a complex institutional environment. Demonstrated commitment to energy management, climate action, and continuous improvement of building systems performance.
  • 5. Commitment to continuous learning, professional development and staying current with industry best practices.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • 1. CxA, CCP, or other nationally recognized commissioning professional designation. PE, CEM, or LEED AP a plus.
  • 2. Working knowledge of commissioning processes and principles from project formulation through turnover and post‑occupancy performance verification.
  • 3. Working knowledge of building automation systems, control logic, and basic network principles.
  • 4. Familiarity with building analytics and fault detection platforms, including SkySpark or Clockworks Analytics.
  • 5. Experience with laboratory ventilation systems, fume hood controls, or other high‑complexity research facility systems.
  • 6. Experience supporting commissioning activities on multiple concurrent projects in an institutional or higher education environment.
