Overview

Reporting to the Building Automation & Data Systems Administrator and working closely with the Engineering & Energy Management team, the Building Automation & Data Systems Engineer provides technical, analytical, and systems expertise for the University’s building automation and data systems across their full lifecycle.

This position supports the integrity, performance, and continuous improvement of Yale’s building automation and data systems across all Yale campuses. This includes performance data analysis and engineering judgement to support capital project delivery, commissioning, ongoing operations, and long-term planning.

This position works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary technical team of internal and external partners, including Yale operational, planning, project management, engineering, and IT staff, as well as outside consultants, integrators, and contractors to provide guidance, direction, and resolution of building automation, IT infrastructure, and energy performance issues.

Required Skills and Abilities

4. Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, Excel analytics, database tools, CAD, and familiarity with server and network management environments.

6. Ability to adapt independently to changing technical priorities and manage multiple assignments and deadlines, along with growth-oriented mindset.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Building Automation & Data Systems

Supports the management of the building automation and data systems that enable monitoring and analysis of building and energy performance. Assists in reviewing campus automation systems and identifying opportunities for system standardization, reliability, data availability, system scalability, improved programming logic, enhanced graphical interfaces, and improved trending and alarming practices. Coordinates with Yale IT, under direction of the Administrator, to support network connectivity, server configuration, and data integrity for building automation systems.

Assists in maintaining as-built documentation of automation systems, including sequences of operation, network architecture, control diagrams, and data point lists. Supports user access management, change tracking, and documentation updates for building automation and analytics systems. Contributes to initiatives involving metering systems, submetering databases, load management, and campus-wide data integration efforts.

2. Building Performance & Energy Analytics

Analyzes building-level system performance using building automation system (BAS) data, metering systems, and analytics platforms to identify operational inefficiencies, comfort concerns, and energy optimization opportunities. Supports development and refinement of fault detection & diagnostic (FDD) rules, trend logs, dashboards, and reporting tools to enhance proactive maintenance and system reliability. Prepares technical reports, energy summaries, and performance analyses for Facilities leadership and campus stakeholders. Supports the development of building performance standards and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to energy management and system optimization.

3. Capital Projects & Commissioning

Participates in the formulation, design, construction, and commissioning of projects overseen by Yale’s capital projects group. Reviews design documents with respect to University objectives and design standards, operability, maintainability, controls integration, and energy performance.

Supports project turnover processes by assisting in the verification of graphical interfaces, trending configuration, alarming setup, and system documentation completeness.

4. Operational Support & Troubleshooting

Assists Campus Operations and Utilities staff in troubleshooting mechanical and controls-related issues. Analyzes system data to identify root causes of operational problems and recommend corrective actions. Assists in preparing scopes of work and technical documentation for energy and controls-related projects.

5. Project & Budget Support

Plans work scopes, requests for proposal, and technical specifications for engineering and controls projects. Manages consultants and contractors to ensure adherence to project scope, schedule, and quality expectations. Participates in project budgeting exercises and provide technical input on capital planning related to building performance and automation.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, electrical, environmental, energy, automation engineering computer engineering, information systems, or related technical field and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Foundational understanding of building mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Foundational understanding of building automation systems, controls logic, basic networking principles, in addition to ireless communication, hardware devices, software and networks.
  • Foundational understanding of the commissioning process as exhibited by the application of commissioning principles starting in project formulation, continuing through design and construction, and concluding with functional testing and system turnover to operations.
  • Enthusiastic willingness to learn and adapt over time, contribute to and benefit from team environment, stay informed and up-to-date on industry best practices and training related to building automation systems, building performance and energy management.
