Job summary

Farm Bureau Financial Services seeks a Commercial Underwriting Manager to lead the underwriting field force and promote profitable growth. The role centers on directing staff development, aligning operations in Iowa and Minnesota, and ensuring accurate coverage decisions and premium collection.

The ideal candidate has seven+ years in insurance with underwriting leadership experience; CPCU/CIC is preferred, and travel may be required. Strong communication and stakeholder relations are essential.

Qualifications

• Must stay current with commercial underwriting trends.

Commercial Underwriting Manager

What You’ll Do:

• Define, implement and monitor a client service strategy consistent with the property/casualty companies’ mission of being the ‘Company of Choice’.
• Partner with the Commercial Vice President and Commercial Business Center Directors to support the alignment of Commercial operations within the states of Iowa and Minnesota.
• Oversee all staff development.
• Lead assigned Commercial Marketing Underwriters in determining acceptability, modification and declinations of commercial new business policies. Ensure the proper premium is collected, and coverage recommendations are accurate.
• Create strategies to drive profitable growth through increased new business across the team of Commercial Marketing Underwriters.
• Drive increased efficiencies in the overall underwriting process to ensure a high level of service for our business partners.
• Develop positive working relationships with all stakeholders.
• Monitor legislative developments, state laws and regulations.
• Make appropriate changes to ensure the company is in compliance. Participate in the design and development of a system to answer complaints from insurance departments and consumers.
• Be a key contact for claims staff by interpreting the intent of commercial coverage and providing legal documentation when needed.

What it takes to join our team:

• College degree or equivalent plus seven (+) years of relevant insurance experience, including at least three years of commercial insurance experience required. Underwriting/claims/insurance experience preferred.
• CPCU or CIC designation preferred.
• Must keep current with Commercial and underwriting trends.
• Required skills include customer service, team orientation, interpersonal, and technical/business/industry regulations related skills.
• Must have excellent problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.
• Proven ability to negotiate and build relationships.
• Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, demanding workload and tight timelines while meeting established guidelines.
• A valid driver’s license and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Records are required. Overnight travel may be required at times.
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
• Oral and written communication skills as appropriate to this position.
• Ability to read, write and speak the English language.
