Job summary

First American seeks a Commercial Underwriting Counsel to join its National Commercial Services team in Seattle. The role focuses on underwriting real estate title insurance commitments and policies, with leadership in applying underwriting standards and guiding settlement services.

Ideal candidates have 5–7 years of title underwriting, a JD, and active bar admission in the employment state. Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

• 5-7 years title underwriting experience, commercial experience preferred.
• Law Degree required and admitted to practice law in state of employment.
• Licensed to practice law, in good standing.
• Must be familiar with real estate law.
• Strong understanding of real estate title and settlement processes.
• Strong analytical rigor and business acumen.
• Strong negotiation skills with tact.
• Collaborate and build relationships internally and externally.
• Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills; multi-tasking and prioritization.

Responsibilities

• Provide underwriting support, counsel, and authorization for title insurance commitments and policies.
• Underwrite issuance of title insurance within delegated authority.
• Guide company personnel in real estate settlement services.
• Issue underwriting standards and guidelines per company processes.
