Job description

John Boner Neighborhood Centers (JBNC) is seeking a dependable, hands‑on Commercial Maintenance Technician to help keep our properties safe, functional, and welcoming for the neighbors, staff, and community members who use them every day.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with our Housing Opportunities team. The role involves significant travel between JBNC properties throughout the area, so it's a great fit for someone who enjoys staying active, solving problems, and working in different environments throughout the day.

About the Role

As a Commercial Maintenance Technician, you'll handle routine maintenance, preventative upkeep, and general repairs across JBNC's commercial and residential properties. Your work will help ensure our buildings and essential systems remain safe, functional, and ready to support the people and programs that depend on them.

You'll work independently at times and alongside other maintenance team members, vendors, and JBNC staff. Because maintenance needs don't always happen during regular business hours, this position also participates in the team's rotating on-call schedule.

A Day in the Life

A typical day may start by reviewing work orders and traveling to a JBNC property to repair drywall, adjust a door, replace a ceiling tile, or troubleshoot a plumbing issue. Later, you might perform preventative maintenance, inspect smoke detectors, change HVAC filters, check equipment for potential problems, or help maintain a mechanical room.

Depending on the season and needs of the properties, you may also assist with snow and ice removal, landscaping, exterior upkeep, room setups, or vendor access. You'll use JBNC vehicles to travel between properties and document completed work through the organization's work-order system.

What You'll Do

Building Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform drywall repairs, painting, basic carpentry, flooring repairs, and furniture assembly.
  • Adjust and repair doors and hardware and replace ceiling tiles.
  • Replace light bulbs, ballasts, switches, outlets, and fixtures within your qualifications.
  • Repair common plumbing issues involving faucets, toilets, sinks, and drains.
  • Assist with HVAC filter changes, preventative maintenance, and basic diagnostics.

Preventative Maintenance & Safety

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and routine building inspections.
  • Check smoke detectors, HVAC filters, equipment, and other building components.
  • Identify and report maintenance concerns before they become larger problems.
  • Keep mechanical rooms and work areas clean, organized, and safe.
  • Follow OSHA standards and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Property & Grounds Support

  • Assist with trash removal, snow and ice control, and landscaping when needed.
  • Help maintain sidewalks and building entrances.
  • Identify and report exterior safety hazards.
  • Support the maintenance team during emergency repairs and other property needs.
What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who enjoys hands‑on work, takes pride in doing the job well, and can identify and solve everyday maintenance problems.

Qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience.
  • At least one year of experience in one or more maintenance areas such as carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, painting, or electrical maintenance.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing stairs and ladders, working outdoors, and lifting up to 70 pounds.
Schedule & On-Call Expectations

This role requires flexibility beyond a traditional Monday-Friday schedule. Maintenance Technicians share a rotating emergency on-call schedule and may occasionally work evenings, weekends, holidays, or outside normal JBNC hours. On-call rotations routinely last seven days. During catastrophic events or weather emergencies, team members may be required to report to work within 90 minutes of notification.

What Success Looks Like

You'll be successful in this role when you're responsive, dependable, safety-conscious, and committed to completing quality work. That means keeping work orders moving, documenting completed repairs, communicating professionally with colleagues and neighbors, meeting administrative deadlines, and responding quickly when urgent maintenance needs arise.

Employmentis contingent upon successful completion of a background check, in accordancewith applicable laws.
