Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a Commercial HVAC Technician for Facilities Operations. The role performs preventive maintenance, repairs, and installations of building HVAC systems to ensure reliable operation across zones, while delivering strong customer service to faculty, staff and students.

The position emphasizes diagnostic work, code compliance, and teamwork. Typical hours are Monday–Friday, 7:30am–4:00pm, with on-call duties as needed and a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• Several years' experience in commercial/institutional HVAC and mechanical maintenance.
• Ability to diagnose, repair, service and install a wide variety of HVAC and mechanical systems.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees and customers.
• Knowledge of appropriate building codes.
• Ability to read/interpret drawings, plans, specifications and scopes.
• Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and power equipment.
• High School diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
• State of Virginia Driver's License required.
• Universal EPA Certification.
• State of Virginia Journeyman HVAC License required or able to obtain within the first year.

Responsibilities

• Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of HVAC and mechanical systems.
• Independently perform regularly scheduled preventive maintenance on building infrastructure.
• Provide exemplary customer service to faculty, staff and students.
• Monitor and guide work of team members and contractors for quality and safety.
• Communicate work schedules, problems and completion times clearly to stakeholders.
• On-call duties during inclement weather and emergencies.
