Job summary

The Kennedy-King College library seeks a College Library Assistant I – Part-Time to support daily operations, assist patrons, shelve materials, and maintain resources. Duties include circulation, guiding online catalogs, inter-library loans, and helping with basic library equipment.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalency certificate (GED).
  • One year of general clerical or data entry experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be taken into consideration.
  • Must be able to demonstrate basic computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical organization of records/materials.
  • Some knowledge of office and general clerical library procedures.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to learn and navigate library’s on-line catalog and related library databases.
  • Some skill in using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).

  • Uses the library system to check items in/out and update student accounts.

  • Processes inter-library loan requests and notifies patrons of results.
  • Searches stacks, places holds, and guides patrons to locate items.
  • Guides basic use of library equipment and public computers.
  • May supervise work-study students at the circulation desk.
  • Conducts space walk-throughs to ensure proper use and rules compliance.

COLLEGE LIBRARY ASSISTANT I – PART TIME
KENNEDY-KING COLLEGE

The Library of Kennedy-King College, one of the City Colleges ofChicago, seeks a College Library Assistant I – Part-Time to performa range of clerical and customer assistance duties to support thedaily operations of the College’s library to include: assistinglibrary patrons /students in locating and accessing libraryresources; answering questions and directing users; shelving andorganizing books and materials; and maintaining the library’sphysical and digital resources. Performs related duties asrequired.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
CIRCULATION
  • Assists library patrons in-person, via email, and over thephone in locating and accessing library resources.
  • Staffs circulation/reserve desks and answers questions; directspatrons to library’s collections and refers to Librarian for morein-depth assistance; and performs related activities.
  • Uses the library’s automated system to charge and dischargebooks and materials; check status of outstanding/delinquent items;and update students’ library account records.
  • Assists patrons in using the on-line catalog and resources;reserves/schedules study rooms; and helps locate and retrievebooks/materials.
  • Processes inter-library loan requests by retrieving, packaging,and sending books/materials to appropriate CCC campus library.Notifies patrons of received loan requests.
  • Searches stacks by call number for requested books; pulls andplaces books on hold for pick-up.
  • Assists and offers guidance in the basic use of libraryequipment such as printers, photocopiers, scanning, and access topublic computers.
  • May provide guidance to work study students staffing thecirculation/reserve desk.
  • Conducts library walk-throughs to ensure space is used as aplace of study and rules are followed.
MAINTENANCE OF LIBRARY COLLECTION
  • Assists with placing books on course reserve each semester.Places books in the appropriate order in the reserve section andreturns books to general circulation as directed.
  • Shelves new and returned books and materials; conducts shelfreads to regularly maintain call number order; searches formis-shelved items; and maintains overall orderliness of the libraryshelves.
  • Shifts books and shelves and weeds materials out of circulationas directed by Librarians.
  • Participates with taking inventory of the librarycollection.
  • Prepares new books and materials for circulation; applies callnumber labels and pocket cards; places security tags; and stampsbooks and materials with library name.
  • Scans bar codes and enters data to update library system withnew acquisitions and deletes records of items weeded from thecollection to maintain accurate records and update inventory.
  • Mends and performs routine repairs on damaged books andmaterials.
OTHER
  • Assists in opening and closing library.
  • Empties book drop and returns books/materials tocirculation.
  • Maintains routine records including daily gate counts; studyroom usage; and related library data.
  • Troubleshoots and performs routine maintenance to printers andphotocopiers.
  • Assists in receiving and checking shipments of new books,materials and supplies against packing slips and invoices foraccuracy and completeness of deliveries.
  • Assists with setting up library displays and preparingsignage.
  • May assist with copy cataloging; locates and downloadsbibliographic records from Online Computer Library Center(OCLC).
  • May assist with preparing paperwork and processingintra-library loan requests as directed.
  • May assist in the training of work study students and newLibrary Assistants as directed.
  • Performs related duties as required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS INFORMATION

Salary Range: $17.05 per hour

Offered salary will be determined by the respective collectivebargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience,knowledge, skills and abilities.
