GENERAL DUTIES

Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework.

• Sets up, maintains, and organizes student laboratories
• Assists students with setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials

The Department of Engineering Technology at Queensborough Community College invites applications for a full-time College Laboratory Technician position.

Reporting to the Chief College Laboratory Technician, the selected candidate will support the daily operation and instructional effectiveness of the Mechanical Engineering laboratories. The College Laboratory Technician prepares and organizes laboratory spaces, sets up experiments, fabricates and assembles fixtures and instructional apparatus, and ensures that all equipment is properly configured and ready for academic use.

The technician operates, maintains, calibrates, and troubleshoots a wide range of mechanical engineering equipment, including manual and CNC machinery such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, band saws, shapers, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM). Responsibilities include supporting CNC machining processes through machine setup, G-code programming, toolpath verification, and technical troubleshooting, as well as maintaining related technologies such as laser engravers and 3D printers.

In collaboration with faculty, the technician provides technical assistance during laboratory sessions, guiding students in the safe and effective use of equipment and materials, assisting with experimental procedures, and resolving mechanical or software-related issues. The role requires proficiency in industry-standard software, including SolidWorks, Mastercam, and Predator, to support design, modeling, CNC programming, and manufacturing workflows.

The position places strong emphasis on maintaining a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment in accordance with institutional policies and industry safety standards. The technician monitors equipment condition, performs preventive maintenance and calibration, maintains accurate documentation and laboratory activity records, and manages inventory of tools, materials, and supplies.

The College Laboratory Technician works closely with faculty and staff to assess laboratory needs, support procurement efforts, and contribute to the continuous development and improvement of laboratory instruction.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.

Other Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications include:

• Demonstrated ability to operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot mechanical engineering laboratory equipment, including manual and CNC machinery such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, band saws, shapers, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
• Experience supporting CNC machining processes, including machine setup, G-code programming, troubleshooting, and operation of related equipment such as laser engravers and 3D printers.
• Experience using industry-standard software such as SolidWorks, Mastercam, Predator, or similar CAD/CAM platforms for design, modeling, and manufacturing support.
• Ability to assist faculty and students in laboratory environments, including preparing experiments, supporting hands-on learning activities, and providing technical guidance on the proper use of equipment and materials.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and demonstrated ability to maintain a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment in accordance with institutional and industry standards.
• Experience maintaining equipment usage logs, preventive maintenance schedules, calibration records, laboratory documentation, and inventory tracking systems.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students and to support instructional activities in a dynamic academic environment.
• Flexibility to support evening and weekend instructional schedules as needed.

Compensation

$55,609 - $65,680 (Salary range reflects 9/1/26 rates per PSC/CUNY collective Bargaining Agreement) Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
