  • Set up the weekly undergraduate physics lab experiments for the introductory physics courses and ensure their proper operation and functionality.
  • Dismantle and store the experimental equipment when not in use.
  • Maintain, fabricate, modify, and repair laboratory equipment, including both the electronic and mechanics hardware as well as software components required by the labs.
  • Install lab software, update lab computers as needed, and work with the college IT department to ensure the security and functionality of the computer interfaces.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and appropriate student learning environment; work with college facilities teams as needed.
  • Prepare the lab & weekly experiment schedule before each term in coordination with the department administration.
  • Determine equipment requirements; prepare purchase specifications and coordinates acquisition of equipment; maintain inventory lists of supplies and equipment,
  • While labs are in session, assist students in laboratories as needed, and provide real time support for lab instructors (which may include occasional instructional activities).

GENERAL DUTIES

Performs supervisory and/or complex technical functions in laboratories in support of coursework.

-Maintains, fabricates, modifies, and repairs equipment

-Determines equipment requirements, prepares purchase specifications and coordinates acquisitions

-Trains and supervises College Laboratory Technicians, College Assistants, and other laboratory staff

-Manages set up, maintenance, and organization of student laboratories

-Maintains safety and hygiene standards

-Documents laboratory activities

-Performs related duties as assigned.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The City College of New York Physics department undergraduate labs serve approximately 1000 students each semester. They operate during all three semesters: Fall, Spring and Summer.

The Department of Physics at the City College of New York (CCNY) invites applications for a full-time, 12-month College Lab Technician (CLT) position primarily dedicated to its instructional labs. The principal responsibility of this CLT position is to manage the day-to-day operations of the undergraduate physics labs that are a crucial component of the introductory physics sequence. This involves hands‑on work with technical lab equipment, strong organizational and planning skills, training lab instructors in the operation of the laboratory apparatus and experimental methods, and a commitment to maintain a clean, safe, and successful learning environment for CCNY students, faculty, and staff. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a record including strong technical skills as well as a proven ability to work with groups. Relevant experience with contemporary physics education practices and laboratory computer interfaces is desired. Reporting to the Chief College Laboratory Technician the duties will include:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.

COMPENSATION

Salary Range: $72,181 - $76,147. Salary commensurate with education and experience.

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
