Position Summary

Upper Montgomery Joint Authority (UMJA) is seeking a Collection System Operator to assist with the operation, inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and repair of its wastewater collection system, pump stations, and treatment plant.

The position requires mechanical aptitude, a strong commitment to safety, the ability to work outdoors in varying conditions, and a willingness to complete required training and maintain applicable wastewater operator certification.

Clean, inspect, maintain, and repair sewer mains, service laterals, manholes, pump stations, and related infrastructure.

Operate sewer jetting, CCTV, camera, flow-monitoring, and other collection-system equipment.

Conduct CCTV, manhole, residential, smoke, and dye inspections; document defects, blockages, infiltration, root intrusion, and maintenance needs.

Maintain GIS records, including assets, inspections, testing results, and repairs.

Assist with the installation, testing, and inspection of sewer mains, laterals, and new connections.

Install, inspect, maintain, and retrieve samplers, flow meters, and other monitoring equipment.

Review monitoring data to identify inflow and infiltration, capacity concerns, blockages, and other system problems.

Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair pump-station pumps, controls, alarms, generators, valves, and related equipment.

Assist with wastewater treatment, sludge-processing, pumping, disinfection, and disposal operations.

Conduct plant and pump-station rounds, interpret operating data, adjust equipment, and maintain accurate logs.

Collect wastewater and sludge samples and perform routine laboratory testing.

Assist with regulatory sampling, monitoring, testing, reporting, and recordkeeping.

Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs throughout the wastewater system.

Safely operate and maintain assigned vehicles, heavy and light equipment, power tools, and hand tools.

Participate in on-call coverage and respond to alarms, equipment failures, sewer overflows, and other emergencies.

Perform rotating weekend and holiday inspections and operational checks.

Communicate professionally with coworkers, contractors, vendors, engineers, residents, and the public.

Follow all safety procedures, including confined-space entry, lockout/tagout, traffic control, chemical handling, respiratory protection, and PPE requirements.

Attend required training and continue developing job-related technical skills.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Basic knowledge of wastewater collection systems, pump stations, treatment processes, and related equipment.

Familiarity with collection-system cleaning, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair.

Ability to read meters, gauges, flow data, maps, plans, charts, and blueprints.

Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, GIS, SCADA, data entry, and electronic recordkeeping.

Ability to prepare accurate logs, work orders, inspection forms, surveys, and reports.

Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to wastewater operations.

Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, decision-making, and communication skills.

Ability to safely operate trucks, forklifts, skid-steer loaders, tractor mowers, specialized sewer equipment, power tools, and hand tools.

Ability to work independently and cooperatively while managing multiple assignments.

Ability to interact with the public in a courteous and professional manner.

Physical and Scheduling Requirements

Ability to stand or sit for extended periods and regularly bend, squat, reach, climb, and use stairs or ladders.

Ability to lift up to 10 pounds continuously, 25 pounds frequently, and 100 pounds occasionally with assistance or appropriate equipment.

Ability to work indoors and outdoors in heat, cold, precipitation, and other adverse conditions.

Ability to work safely while wearing an approved respirator and other required PPE.

Ability to participate in on-call coverage, work overtime, and respond during nights, weekends, and holidays.

Education, Experience, and Certification

High school diploma or GED required.

Applicable wastewater operator license or certification required, including Class A, Subclasses 1, 4, and E, as required by UMJA.

Required to complete Operation and Maintenance of Wastewater Collection Systems, Volumes I and IIwithin one year of hire.

Experience in wastewater operations, utility maintenance, construction, equipment operation, mechanical repair, or a related field is preferred.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience may be considered.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.Operators rotate weekend coverage of approximately 2-3 hours per day, along with on-call responsibilities.
