Job description

Performs semiskilled work in the supervision of the Chatham County Collection Centers including supervision of the Collection Center Attendants, preparing weekly staffing schedules, and conducting weekly inspections of the Collection Centers. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Solid Waste Manager with the ability to exercise independent judgment within the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. The following essential functions serve as a general guide for this position. Position functions are subject to change based on departmental needs and external factors including, but not limited to, regulatory requirements.

  • Maintains employee files, evaluates employee performance, conducts annual evaluations, and follows the disciplinary procedure when necessary;
  • Prepares weekly staffing schedules to ensure sufficient coverage at all Collection Centers, managing requests for time off, and approving timesheets bi-weekly;
  • Operates Collection Centers, when needed;
  • Assists with recruitment and selection of the Collection Center Attendants including coordinating the training of new hires and providing additional training to ensure Attendants comply with policies, procedures, and guidelines;
  • Adheres to the departmental safety rules and regulations, and uses appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ensuring the safety of self, visitors, contractors, and other employees;
  • Conducts weekly inspections of the Collection Centers for safety, compliance, and cleanliness and properly reports any issues with the Center, tools, supplies, or equipment;
  • Communicates information to Attendants, visitors, contractors, and other county staff, orally or in writing;
  • Responds to residents’ questions, suggestions, and complaints about the Collection Centers;
  • Ensures uniforms and supplies are ordered, distributed, and well maintained;
  • Assists co-workers and other departments as necessary;
  • Attends training as needed;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in a supervisory role or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Proficiency with common computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook;
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and train employees;
  • Ability to perform manual work in varying weather conditions;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Knowledge of the applicable procedures, policies, laws, materials, and equipment related to the collection of waste and recyclables;
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices, and the ability to apply these practices to assigned work;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, consultants, vendors, developers, elected officials, engineers, associates, and the general public.
Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, use of hands and fingers, handling, feeling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing, balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing, pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally require working near moving mechanical parts; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
