Job summary

Valley Health System seeks a Coding Educator to manage coding and chart documentation-training programs to ensure consistent and accurate ICD-10 coding by Health Information Management Coders.

You will collaborate with medical staff, coders and Valley Medical Group staff on documentation best practices in the medical record, and provide education on CPT, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS coding to support compliant, timely coding.

Qualifications

• Associates degree in a health or business related field is strongly recommended.
• Bachelor’s degree is a preferred.
• Successful completion of a post-secondary billing or coding program or coursework, or the equivalent combination of experience, education
• CPC (Certified Professional Coder) and CPMA (Certified Professional Medical Auditor) preferred.
• Five (5) years of progressive coding experience in a medical group practice setting, with coding/billing experience in multiple medical specialties.

Responsibilities

• Manage coding and chart documentation-training programs to ensure consistent and accurate ICD-10 coding by Health Information Management Coders.
• Work with medical staff, coders and Valley Medical Group staff on best practices for documentation in the medical record.
• Provide ongoing education on CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS coding and related compliance guidelines.
• Assist in meeting coding education needs and deadlines for provider groups.

Job description

Position Summary The purpose of the Coding Educator is to manage coding and chart documentation-training programs in order to ensure consistent and accurate ICD-10 coding by Health Information Management Coders. The Coding Trainer/Educator will work with the medical staff, coders and other Valley Medical Group staff on best practices for documentation in the medical record.

Education

• Associates Degree in a health or business related field is strongly recommended.
• Bachelor,s degree is a preferred.
• Successful completion of a post-secondary billing or coding program or coursework, or the equivalent combination of experience, education
• CPC (Certified Professional Coder) and CPMA (Certified Professional Medical Auditor) preferred.

Experience

Five (5) years of progressive coding experience in a medical group practice setting, with coding/billing experience in multiple medical specialties. Surgical and outpatient procedural coding is required.

Skills

• Experience in using medical billing software and electronic medical records is required. Athena and/or Meditech software experience is highly desired.
• Advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of: medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease process, and surgical procedures.
• Knowledge of accepted medical abbreviations and their meanings.
• Knowledge in the use of specialized references such as the ICD-10-CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS, medical dictionaries and texts, and medical journals.
• Abides by the standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and American Health information Management Association (AHIMA) and adheres to all official coding and compliance guidelines.
• Must be able to function within a pre-determined schedule, and be able to meet deadlines consistently.
• The ability to work in a collaborative manner with coding staff, practice administrators and physicians to determine team needs and prioritize workflow.
• Organizational skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently with minimum supervision is essential.
• Must have the ability to research and analyze data, draw conclusions and resolve issues, read, interpret and apply policies, procedures laws and regulations.
• Must have the ability to read and interpret medical procedures and terminology.
• Must have excellent communication and presentation skills.

Training:

• Medical Terminology coursework required.
• Anatomy & Physiology or Pathophysiology required.
• Ability to assign, sequence and validate all CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS codes with appropriate modifier usage is required.
• Working knowledge of CCI edits and other regulatory guidance is required.
• Ability to develop, implement, deliver, and assess coding education plans using a variety of methods to individual providers or provider groups.
• Understanding of Healthcare insurance guidelines as relevant to correct coding initiatives is necessary.
• Advanced level reading, writing and oral communications skills are essential.
