University Medical Associates (UMA) is seeking a coder/abstracter to ensure precise coding for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services based on patient records. You will follow ICD-10 and CPT guidelines and adhere to AMA, AHA, and AHIMA standards, within MUSC policies and procedures.

The role requires an associate or equivalent experience in coding, with certifications such as CPC/CCS preferred, and strong analytical and communication skills to resolve coding issues.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in health information technology or related field or 5 years coding experience.
  • Coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS) required.
  • With Associate’s degree, minimum of 2-3 years of experience in coding and familiarity with coding software.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to resolve coding issues.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately assign codes for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services based on patient records.
  • Apply ICD-10 and CPT coding guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with AMA, AHA, and AHIMA guidelines and MUSC policies.

The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurate code assignment of all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures and conditions as indicated in the patient medical record.

Classification systems include ICD-10 and CPT edition, and all coding is in accordance with official coding guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Health Information Management Association. All work is carried out in accordance with the Health Information Management Department and MUSC approved policies and procedures.

Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in health information technology or related field or 5 years coding experience
  • coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS) required
