MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) in South Carolina seeks a coder/abstracter to assign accurate ICD-10 and CPT codes for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services based on patient records. You will work within the Health Information Management Department to ensure compliant coding practices.

Proficiency in ICD-10/CPT, strong attention to detail, and good communication are required; HS diploma and coding credentials are preferred. This is an on-site, regular, 40-hour workweek.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; certification in coding (e.g., CPC, CCS) preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, etc.).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Good communication skills and willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Code inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service records for diagnoses, procedures, and conditions.
  • Apply ICD-10 and CPT coding guidelines per AMA, AHA, and AHIMA.
  • Follow Health Information Management policies and MUSC procedures.

Job Description Summary

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) is an entity within the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) that provides healthcare to patients within the rural health network throughout the state of South Carolina.

Job Description

The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurate code assignment of all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures and conditions as indicated in the patient medical record. Classification systems include ICD-10 and CPT edition, and all coding is in accordance with official coding guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Health Information Management Association. All work is carried out in accordance with the Health Information Management Department and MUSC approved policies and procedures.
