Job summary

Qualifications

• Graduate of accredited coding program.
• Minimum one year of inpatient/outpatient coding in an acute care setting.
• Credentials: CPC, COC, CIC, CCA, CCS, RHIT or RHIA.
• Proficiency with PC applications including Windows and 3M Encoder.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret documentation to identify diagnoses and procedures.
• Utilize hospital encoder/grouper and adhere to AHA guidelines.
• Serve as coding resource for other departments and providers.
• Ensure accurate MS-DRG assignment across inpatient and outpatient records.

Position Description

This position is responsible for coding inpatient and outpatient medical records according to ICD-10-CM and CPT in keeping with AHA coding guidelines. Codes are assigned to all diagnostic and procedural statements as documented in each patient’s medical record to determine the most accurate and optimal MS-DRG assignment.

Duties

• Thoroughly reads and interprets documentation in the medical record to identify all diagnoses and procedures.
• Demonstrates proficiency with overall utilization of hospital encoder/grouper and its functions.
• Effectively utilizes AHA Coding Guidelines and other reference sources available within the department.
• Serves as coding resource for other departments/providers.

• One year of inpatient/outpatient coding experience in an acute care facility required.
