Job summary

National Police is seeking qualified personnel to handle fire investigations and life-safety inspections across assigned county areas. The role involves responding to hazardous materials incidents, conducting investigations, and performing inspections of facilities and construction sites.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Responds to hazardous materials incidents and assists with related investigations; inspects facilities using hazardous materials.
  • Responds to fire scenes and conducts fire investigations to determine origin and cause.
  • Investigates complaints of illegal burning and other code/or ordinance violations.
  • Documents cases and prepares reports with investigation results.
  • Conducts fire and life safety inspections of existing non-residential buildings and new construction.
  • Tests fire alarm and sprinkler suppression systems.
  • Responds to emergencies to provide assistance or mutual aid as trained.
  • Performs general clerical tasks including data entry, reports, and correspondence.
  • Attends training to stay current on investigation and inspection methods.

Job description

Salary: $22.78 – $36.42

Essential Functions:

  • Responds to situations involving the presence of hazardous materials; assists with related investigations; assists in inspecting facilities using hazardous materials.
  • Responds to fire scenes in Richland County; assists in conducting fire investigations to determine the origin and cause of fires.
  • Investigates complaints regarding possible illegal burning.
  • Investigates other potential code and ordinance violations that contribute to the preservation of public safety.
  • Documents cases and prepares reports to record and transmit the results of investigations.
  • Conducts fire and life safety inspections of existing non-residential buildings and new construction located in assigned area of the County; prepares, documents and maintains inspection reports; conducts follow-up inspections as necessary to verify mandated corrections have been made within established timeframe.
  • Provides fire alarm and sprinkler suppression system testing.
  • May respond to fires and/or other emergencies to provide assistance or mutual aid based on training and qualifications.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility.
  • Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, compiling data for reports, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Attends training, seminars, workshops and meetings to remain knowledgeable of modern investigation and inspection methods and administration.

Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must possess S.C. Deputy Fire Marshal certification or have the knowledge and experience to obtain the certification within six months; may be required to possess or obtain other certifications as deemed necessary by supervisor.
  • Must have knowledge of firearms to include weapon qualification.
  • Requires over two years and up to and including four years in the fire service or three years of experience in code enforcement.
