Job description

This position will ensure rapid response to fire alarms throughout the County to protect the lives of those involved to the best of their ability.

  • Response – The incumbent is responsible for responding to all requests for assistance. This includes driving the truck, assess the situation upon arrival, and initiate the appropriate intervention to mitigate the incident back to safety. This includes using the resources of law enforcement, HAZMAT, EMS, or any other needed to provide the necessary assistance to protect lives and property and return the area to safety. When first on the scene, this position will operate as the Incident Commander unless someone of higher authority arrives.
  • Equipment maintenance – This position will inspect, maintain, test, clean and repair/arrange for repair of all fire apparatus, equipment, and gear to ensure proper operation, certification, fit, readiness and cleanliness for instant use. Logs of all maintenance records are maintained and available for inspection when needed.
  • Training – The incumbent is responsible for continuously training and reviewing training materials to maintain appropriate certifications, and to stay knowledgeable on modern firefighting/emergency response methods and related safety procedures.
  • Station maintenance – When needed, this position will inspect, clean and report station safety and cleanliness issues to ensure a safe working environment for employees and the public alike.

Under limited supervision, the incumbent will make any decisions involving the risk of safety to employees and the public, and as such, to take equipment out of service when unfit or unsafe. Anything requiring a change in policy or procedure is reviewed with the Chief.

No two calls are the same. The challenge is dealing with all of the inherent dangers of fighting fire, including potential chemicals, physical elements, and distraught citizens. The reverse is also a problem – getting complacent into thinking all calls are routine calls, and then not being prepared for a true emergency.

In conducting safety inspections, the challenge is to make certain nothing is overlooked.

This is an individual contributor.
