This posting may be filled as a Code Inspector I or Code Inspector II depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant.The City offers a generous benefits package, which includes health, dental and life insurance, retirement and savings plans, maternity/paternity and parental leave, holidays and leaveDuties of this position include, but not limited to:-Inspection of new residential and commercial building HVAC installation, including repairs, alterations, additions, and /or renovations in compliance with the Virginia Mechanical Codes.-Review of Mechanical plans for code compliance.-Investigate Mechanical related complaints.-Answer Mechanical code questions for contractors, homeowners, and citizens by phone, email and/or in person.-Enter inspection results on laptop computer through Accela automated permitting system.-Issue Stop Work Orders and Notices of code violations.-Issue summonses.-Appear in court to provide expert testimony in cases involving the applicable -State and City code-Other related duties as assigned.Additional duties of a Mechanical Code Inspector II include:-Must possess a valid Virginia State HVAC Master License, Virginia State (DHCD) Residential Mechanical and Commercial Mechanical Inspector Certification.Preferred candidate:-Experience in HVAC installation-Mechanical code compliance-Working for a municipality-Possess Virginia State Mechanical Masters license, Residential & Commercial Mechanical Certification, or a diversity of ICC/DHCD Certifications-Strong customer service and communication skills-Team-player who can also work independentlyAdditional requirements:• DMV Transcript: Yes• CDL: No• Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse: No• CPS Check: No• Physical: No• Respirator: No• Psychological Screening: No• Polygraph: No• At Will: NoMinimum Requirements:Minimum Qualifications for Code Inspector I: High school or GED plus four (4) years’ experience in a mechanical related field providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions.as HVAC mechanic, mechanical inspector, or building inspector; or any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. • Must have a current and valid driver’s license.Special Requirements • Must possess a State Master Mechanic’s Certificate or obtain one within one (1) year of employment with the City of Virginia Beach. • Must obtain ICC (International Code Construction) Residential Mechanical Certification and ICC (International Code Construction) Commercial Mechanical Certification within 18 months of employment with the City. • All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. • Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. • This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned.Minimum Qualifications for Code Inspector II: High school or GED plus five (5) years’ experience in a field related to mechanical construction which utilizes the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and in positions such as heating and air conditioning technician; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
